As per TSN, Leafs forward Mark Bell has been suspended indeffinatly by the NHL stemming from the incident last year.
Now, from what I have been reading, Mark Bell has been clean and sober for almost a year. I feel that this is a formality that the NHL had to do to get it on record and come camp we'll see Bell skating with the team.
This seems a tad bit unnecessary.... should be cleared up before training camp since he claims to have been sober for so long.. why not have someone meet with him first before suspending the guy??
Did they suspend Danny Heatley when he killed Dan Synder?
Dany Heatley doesn't have a substance abuse problem. Bell does, has since Jr hockey. This a joint program sponsered not just by the NHL but the NHLPA as well.
Like I said earlier, I feel this is a formality for the NHL and the NHLPA to get it on record, if you believe the reports, Bell has been clean and sober for almost a year.
Yes but Dany Heatley was under the influence of alchol when he was driving (same as Bell). And although I dont agree with Bell's decision, I believe that the NHL and NHLPA are being a bit unjust towards Bell.

He was not legally drunk, the blood alcohol level was so low, that it barely registered. AND again, Heatley doesn't have a substance abuse history like Bell does. This is a substance abuse policy, not a drive real fast in a real fast car and crash policy.

Typical Leaf response. I can't wait to hear how Bell's suspension costs the Leafs the Cup this year and somehow it's all Kerry Fraser's fault. I can see it now in vivid color on "The Passion Returns: Part 0".

Typical non-Leaf response to a Leaf response. I can't wait to hear how the Leafs are too old this year and how everyone on the team is only good enough for the AHL. Somehow it'll be all Mats Sundin's fault. I can see it now in vivid colour on "Revenge of the Leaf Bashers 3: The Troll Returns!"
Gotta love how someone who doesn't approve of either Heatley nor Bell's costly mistakes attempts to draw a comparison in punishments...oh wait, he's a Leafs fan, clearly whatever he says is homerish and makes no sense..
Maybe we Leafers should disguise who we root for so the impartial and enlightened opposition will take us seriously, eh? Maybe then they'll read what we write and respond, agree or disagree, to what we've actually written.
In any case, now that my tirade is over, I'll have to say that although Bell apparently feels truely sorry for what he's done, he deserves to be punished. If he is truely sorry, he will have to go through with whatever punishment is dished out in pennance for his crime. I also believe he should complete his jail time through the season as well, because a) there should be no special treatment for anyone, including athletes, and b) it'll be real good to get it off his shoulders so he can go back to playing hockey.
Hope to see him play in the blue and white soon.

Believe it or not he isn't getting special treatment. It is very common in non-violent situations for people to be able to serve their sentences on weekends and holidays so as to not have their working life affected. Why should it be any difference for hockey players?

Hehe after I posted that I thought somebody might hit me with a fact like that. I personally think that if you did something wrong you should not be able to choose when you serve your jailtime because its supposed to be a punishment, and not a tedious inconvenience. Still, its a good fact to know . You learn something every day.
My point a might have been weak, but I stand by my point b.
