Default JFJ on the verge.....

According to sources, Ferguson is close to signing a contract extension with the Maple Leafs, a team that has surprised the NHL by getting out of the gate with an impressive 11-5-0-3 record.

Ferguson, whose contract with the Leafs is up after this season, is reportedly close to signing a multi-year extension with the team. However, in what has become a trend in hockey, it’s believed to be a one-year deal with a series of team-option years to follow. It is the kind of contract that has been commonplace in baseball and football and was also signed recently by George McPhee of the Washington Capitals and Doug MacLean of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

With this type of contract, the team can terminate the deal at any time. But instead of being responsible for paying out a long-term deal, it would only pay the remainder of that season, plus one more. In effect, it is a series of one-year renewable contracts with the team having the security of a long-term deal without the commitment.

The time is certainly right for Ferguson to negotiate a new contract. Unlike the summer of 2005, his off-season moves have proven to be very astute early in the season. Getting Tie Domi, Jason Allison and Ed Belfour out of the dressing room has been a boon to the team, as have the additions of checking center Michael Peca and goalie Andrew Raycroft.

But perhaps Ferguson’s best move was convincing Paul Maurice to coach the Leafs farm team last season, then elevating him to the Leafs head coaching job to replace the fired Pat Quinn.
This needs to get done, Fergy and MO are working really well as a team.

All of Fergies offseason bets are paying off huge, I didn't like the Gill and Peca signings, but they are TO's PK the security I feel when TO is down two men is a feeling I cannot even say I have felt before, and Rayzor was the sun that tipped the iceberg. Kubinia was one of the safer signings and really they only question mark.

After all the trash talk last year JFJ is finally getting some respect. It's good to see the Leafs get off to a good start, now if they can play like this after the break....
