TORONTO (CP) - At first glance, it's a somewhat startling revelation.

The much-improved Toronto Maple Leafs, with 26 points in 20 games thanks to an impressive 11-5-4 record, are only two points ahead of last year's pace at the quarter pole.

"Really?" defenceman Tomas Kaberle said when told of the numbers Friday.

Indeed, Pat Quinn's Leafs last season got off to a similarly strong start at 11-7-2 through 20 games. It's what happens next that will differentiate the clubs.

"We can't have that losing streak like we had in January last year," Leafs centre Matt Stajan said Friday after practice. "We can't go in a funk like that. We have to keep winning hockey games. But it's a different team here".
Full Story

As surprising as that might be, it's the rest of the season that should determine the fate of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

They started of the season very inconsitently, and only in the last 3 weeks have they finally found their game. Now it will come down to whether or not grinding out victories will give the team better results than having players sit back and watch as the Goaltenders tries to bail them out time and time again.

Right now, I hope they continue to play the way that they are playing. They do that, and the playoffs should be on the inside of the top 8 for the rest of the year. Consistency in their game is key now.

Not to mention that 2 points is what they missed the playoffs by last year. If they can stay focussed and keep on winning, the results will be different.

The must be, I mean, it makes sense.

Yes? No?

But we're prepared for all the bumps and pratfalls and potholes in the road ahead. I'm prepared for it anyway, or I wouldn't have come." - Ron Wilson, Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
