Gary Roberts and Joe Nieuwendyk aren't going anywhere.
TSN has learned the two veteran forwards who grew up together in Whitby, Ont., have agreed to terms with the Toronto Maple Leafs, opting not to test unrestricted free agency at midnight.
Sources say Roberts agreed to a one-year deal with a base salary of $3.75 million while Nieuwendyk agreed to a one-year deal that will pay him $3 million.
That's a $500,000 decrease from what Roberts earned last season and a $1 million increase over what Nieuwendyk earned in 2003-04.
Finally, its about time these deals got done.. seeing as how much they're getting paid, I'm not so sure they will go after Eddie especially with the CBA
JFJ still needs to address the teams biggest need....DEFENCE. Hopefully when the FA season opens at midnight they can find a few d men . They we are set.
But then he won't produce, he will bitch and whine about his ice time, and everyone will then talk about how the Leafs overpaid for the services of an over-the-hill veteran meaning that JFJ is out of it etc etc etc.

Not true. If he's on the second line, he'll get about the same amount of ice time and he'll still produce because he'll still have a great center man in Nieuwendyk.
Also, Roberts has never been one to bitch and whine about his ice time, even when he wasn't on the top line.

Hopefully playing with his buddy Niewendyk on the second line will keep old-man Roberts mouth shut. Sundin needs a LWer better than Gary if the Leafs are gonna compete. Roberts is just a overglorified garbageman. Sundin needs a player that can enhance his level of play.

Not true? Didn't that Roberts/Nieuwendyk experiment not pan out last season? Oh and I really shouldn't assume anything a player says as I am not at liberty to hear what goes on behind closed doors, so I rescind my previous comment about Roberts complaining about ice time. I'll let someone else start that definite topic.

Shanny would definitely be a nice player to have. I was thinking more along the lines of Recchi though. He played in 82 games last year, and got 75 points. 49 of those points were assists too, so that tells me he's not a garbageman like Roberts and will actually setup Mats, hopefully making him a more productive player. Another interesting player would be Pavol Demitra. I know he's a natural center, but he is capable of playing on the left wing. He's also two years removed from a 93 point season, and talent-wise is on the same level as Sundin. However St. Louis still does have time to qualify him, and he would come with a hefty price tag. So Recchi would probably be my choice.
EDIT: My bad, Demitra can play RW not LW. We need a top line RWer though anyways  As for Recchi, SN has him listed as a LW, TSN has him listed as a RW. Which one is it :?
