The main difference being that while those players were notorious for giving their former teams the shaft, Esau is completely unknown and accomplished nothing. Wearing an Esau jersey would be more a look of confusion than a look of anger.

Well, for one thing, my own name is the only name I'd ever consider putting on a jersey UNLESS and ONLY UNLESS I know the player personally or the player is either really obscure or are somewhat obscure but flat out sucked (re: Jiri Crha) as to invoke a feeling of humourous disbelief that someone somewhere would buy a freaking vintage Leonard Esau (or Jiri Crha) jersey. And that person is me!
I can devote myself to a team, but not to a player (even though I'm sure there are a few honorable examples like Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic). I'd hate to buy a player jersey only to have him pull a "Paul Kariya" or a "Todd Bertuzzi". (The only two exceptions being for Game-Worn jerseys, which I wouldn't wear anyways, and for a vintage Oilers Gretzky jersey in which nothing bad can ever be said about it.)
I applaud people for putting their own name on a jersey. It shows loyalty.

I'm going to put my name on the jersey I get.
I have an autographed Gretzky jersey but its a Kings jersey not an Oilers one.
