Maple Leaf Gardens sold to Canadian food distributor
------------------------------------------------------
TORONTO (Ticker) - Maple Leaf Gardens, the former home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was sold to Canada's largest food distributor on Tuesday.
The sale to Loblaw Properties Limited - Canada's largest food distributor - is expected to close early in 2004.
"We're excited to be acquiring Maple Leaf Gardens which is a revered landmark that is a part of both hockey and Canadian history," said Geoffrey Wilson, vice president of industry and investor relations for Loblaw Companies Limited. "We're committed to continuing to celebrate the veneue as the former home of sports heroes and Stanley Cup winning teams."
The grocery chain plans to build a Loblaws combination food and non-food market with other retail within the existing interior of Maple Leaf Gardens. The store, set to open in 2005, will include areas dedicated to the building's history and a retail outlet will sell Maple Leaf memorabilia and merchandise.
One of the NHL's historic buildings, Maple Leaf Gardens had been home to the Leafs from 1931-99. The club relocated to the Air Canada Centre in February 1999.
The King of Kensington's dream is finally realized.....
Instead of numbering the aisles, they could name them after former Leafs. In the Harold Ballard aisle, all the good stuff is gone and you are expected to buy the crap for really expensive prices. In the Lanny McDonald aisle, you get hair care products and shaving creme but no razors. In the Tiger Williams aisle, you can buy nuts, every kind of nut in the world. And there has to be a Tie Domi/Mats Sundin aisle that sells only Chunky Soup.
If you get caught sampling the grapes, you get two minutes in the penalty box. Shoplifting means a game misconduct and a trip to the big house.

Hey, Iced Tea. Good idea. Who would you name the fruit dept. after?
Iced Tea, I would have gone with the more obvious Wendal Clark asile.
For those in the dark for years there were people in the media and around Toronto that questioned his sexuality.
Sorry, forgot about that. I guess talk of Wendal Clark's sexuality was overshadowed by the constant badgering Richard Gere got about his sexuality, which all stopped after he married Cindy Crawford k: . As for Tucker, I know that he bruises easy, can be bitter, has thin skin, is cheap, and likes to show off his little berries. The choice was obvious.
