GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—Free agent defenseman Adrian Aucoin(notes) has signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, giving the team a veteran presence on and off the ice.
Coyotes general manager Don Maloney called Aucoin an “an intelligent, puck-moving defenseman who will help improve our power play and bring leadership to our locker room.”
The deal was announced Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 35-year-old former All-Star had 10 goals and 24 assists in 81 games last season with the Calgary Flames.
He has 108 goals and 228 assists in 851 career NHL games with Vancouver, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Calgary and the New York Islanders.
ok 21 days into the free agency and having sign a couple of free agents (aucoin, fiddler, korpikoski) and also some of last years squad (yandle, prucha)and also losing a few player (lisin, dawes,) and with some still yet to sign (upshall, winnik,)still thinking we are a big scorer missing. having not replacing jokinen yet at first line centre is a big concern. of course with the court case around ownership still going on probadly holding things back but we still need to pick up some more scoring and some much needed steel in defence, theres still a few players out there that could add some scoring (sykora, satan, jason williams, afinogenov, tanguay).
maybe some could be risky but we need some scoring and experience to add to the youth talent that we have, also maybe a trade is needed to bring in a good player, heatley wouldnt come but there must be some big name stars that would jump at the chace to come to the desert.
any thoughts......
and coming to phoenix in october for the first time and catching the blues and bruins games, cant wait to see the coyotes in action live....
Tampa Bay and Phoenix have completed a three-player trade with the Coyotes trading left wing Todd Fedoruk and defenseman David Hale for right wing Radim Vrbata.
I think the Coyote's activity this year has been under-rated actually. They've steadily improved their team, without making a huge splash, which is what a team in their situation has to do.
Vandermeer and Aucoin both bring experience to the Coyotes' blue-line and can help mentor players like Yandle, Ahnelov and Schlemko into the NHL. As well, Aucoin brings a big right handed shot to help Phoenix's powerplay.
Their offense could use one more pick-up to just polish it off, but Vrbata helps provide some offense to take some pressure off of the young guns. Signing a player like Mike Comrie could possibly fill that role.
vrbata is a good pick up for what we traded in my mind, todd was ok but hale didnt make a great impact, think comrie would also be a good pick up, just wondering if the management are waiting to see who owns the club before making a big move or if the owners are wanting to make a big signing as a statement of intent when the aquire the club.
how much under salary cap must we be at the moment. 5-10 million? possibly more, theres room to make a couple of big name signings
