Default Rookie Final: It's the Pens, not the Sens

Staff Writer Ottawa Senators
Sep 10, 2007, 10:18 PM EDT

Kitchener, Ont. - The Pittsburgh Penguins rookies dominated the final of the Kitchener Rookie Tournament by beating the Ottawa Senators 5-1. The Penguins built a 5-0, until the Senators Ilya Zubov scored his third of the tournament at 10:03 of the final period.

Pittsburgh had goals from Ryan Stone in the first period, Joe Jensen and Matt Caria in the middle frame, and Alex Grant and Jensen, with his second of the game, in the final 20 minutes.

Brian Elliot made 40 saves for Ottawa for his first loss in two games.

The Toronto Maple Leafs rookies shutout the Florida Panthers 4-0 in the afternoon consolation game.

The Senators return to Ottawa on Tuesday, with players returning to their junior teams and others to the club’s main camp which opens on Thursday.

Well it's an all to familiar taste of losing in the finals again for the Sens, but they played well behind some great goaltending after getting outshot in every game except 1 I think, this tournament. Zubov definitely impressed me this tourny at least from the reports, as did Nikulin, hopefully those guys have a good pre-season camp yet. I expect Nikulin to start the season on the squad, Zubov I kind of don't expect to see in the NHL just yet. As for Foligno he is definitely going to need some more priming, but who knows how well he will do yet this pre-season, but more than likely he should be in Bingo to start the year, probably getting a couple call ups with the inevitable Fisher injury forthcoming.
