Wonder why the Sens draw so poorly. Did we all see all the people disguised as empty seats at the Office Depot center last night. That is one of the real problems with hockey, too many teams that draw poorly. Good game though
I don't think it's the Sens. Doesn't matter what team plays their they always draw a pathetic crowd. That is why the teh NHL should do away with teams like that and move them to places where they will sell out every game(ie Winnipeg, Hamilton, etc...). You know what is sad is that the Defending stanley cup champions are drawing just over 10,000 a game. It seems the better they do the less fans show up.

3 teams in the NYC area is too many plus the Devils style of play doesn't exactly resemble entertainment. If they played a more wide open style the crowds would grow.

its time the nhl got rid of some of the smaller market teams that just dont have what it takes to run an NHL team. and i dont mean relocation. i mean just lose them. fold them. lets take it back down to 26 teams and have some of the teams stop crying poor. btw, this isnt a shot at the sens, i would hate to lose another canadian team.

the sens play at the corel centre. Panthers play at the Office Depot Center.
But really it isn't worth answering to you, since you have been banned!
Anybody here that is actually from Ottawa or have spent any amount of time there can easily tell you why Ottawa doesn't draw so well some nights. #1 It is not a very big city, their per capita turnout is probably higher than most NHL cities.
#2 The Corel Center is like 45 freaking minutes from downtown, it is literally in the middle of nowhere, in a vast parking lot.............well Kanata pretty close
#3 A lot of their tickets are sold to local businesses and corporate folks who don't attend/give away tickets to the games every time the Sens play.
The folks in Ottawa really love their hockey team. I was there last year around playoff time and it was amazing to see all the sens paraphanalia on basically everything. They sold these sens flags that were probably on every 2nd car in the city.

I live here. I think we've heard enough excuses about the Corel Center location. The location sucks but it probably won't move. So we'll have to live with it. Ottawa is a somewhat bigger city than Edmonton or Calgary and the attendance #'s are similar to Edmonton's I think. I don't think it is really true that there are more empty seats here than other similar-sized (small) markets. There are often empty seats here for sure - but never more than a few thousand - and for crappy opponents and mostly in the pricey lower bowl sections. Regular people just refuse to pony up $600 for the family to sit in good seats to watch Columbus or Nashville. Understandable. Just watch a New Jersey Devils game if you want to see whole sections of empty seats - and in late round playoff games no less.
Hockey is a BIG deal here. But the great thing is that there are usually some seats available and people can go to almost any game if they want to. There is a HUGE minor hockey network here. I can't imagine there are better fans anywhere. And when the playoffs come around the fans are rabid. Sounds about a perfect balance for a great hockey city like Ottawa. :]
definite good points......I don't think that the location of the arena can be wholly blamed for the lack of turnout some nights but wouldn't a better location help?? I heard that one of the sites planned at first was LaBreton Flats. It would be better if you could get to the rink easily and quickly from downtown. I know they can't change the location now but since we're looking for reasons.

Labreton Flats would have been the ideal place to build it, but there were some complications. First, the city wanted alot out of the deal to put the stadium there, even though it was on federal property I believe. Second, the Corel Centre, which was originally called the Palladium, was to have a casino and hotel attached to it, with the stadium having a capacity of over 20000. That made space limited, but everytime I drive by there it seems there was tons of space, because a parking lot was not really needed as the bus service (with a transit service all ready in place) would have been good enough for people to commute to the games. More people from Quebec (Hull) would have come over and the east end of Ottawa as well. Plus, the walk-up crowd would have been much larger then what it is now. The property is under construction as a new enormous Museum for our Veterans is being built to replace the old one on Sussex Drive.

Well in Vancouver our arena is downtown but most of the people don't. Urban sprawl doesn't even do the lower mainland justice. From where I live with our crappy highways it takes an hour and a half to get there. Most people going to the game would have at least a 45 minute commute.
The main problem with Ottawa is that the market is relatively small. I'm also guessing that management hasn't done a good enough job of marketing or a team of that calibre would sell out nightly regardless of the demographics. The Canucks market the game more than they ever have in the past. You can't flick on the TV with out seeing a Canuck commercial. Bill boards all over the place too.
When you go to the game they do a good job of making it more of a show than just a game. In the old Coliseum days you had the organist playing chopsticks, the national anthem was sung and they dropped the puck. Now it's like a rock concert with a cool light show before during and after, blasting loud music, sirens blaring etc.
I don't know what they do in Ottawa but clearly it is not enough or the place would be packed.
