"On Tuesday at my request, my agents arranged a face-to-face meeting with the Ottawa Senators management in the hope of completing a contract so that I might join my teammates for the start of the season," the statement read. "It was made clear to me by the Senators' management during this meeting, based on their offer and other comments, they are not prepared to pay me anywhere near what other players with similar statistics are being paid around the league.
"I made a significant move to get a contract completed before opening night. In fact, the offer I submitted to the Senators would make me the fifth-highest paid forward and the ninth-highest paid player on the team. I was given an ultimatum to sign a contract far below the league's average salary which I cannot accept. I am not trying to establish a new market.
"I simply want to receive what I believe I am worth within the current market place as established by Philadelphia's Simon Gagne and Tampa Bay's Brad Richards. I am terribly disappointed by the position of the Senators and their negotiating tactics. I am returning to the Czech Republic."
Have a nice holiday Marty. Don't worry buddy, you'll be richer than 99.99999% of people on this planet before you turn 27 years old.
I'm disappointed that he isn't signed right now, but I'm glad that Ottawa is one of the few organizations that won't give into their players demands. Its setting a good precedence for the rest of the team. Muckler is doing the right thing. Too often teams give into players and give them ridiculous salaries. For those of you who think Ottawa is being stupid, Ottawa is helping out other teams here by not giving in..ie Oilers, Canucks, etc.

So Ottawa doesn't give in to his salary demands but what if they decide that he isn't worth the hassle and trade him. Isn't a trade giving into his demands as well? Both the Oilers and Senators say they won't give in but trading the players is the same thing. The players want to be traded, so what, they can sit at home and become frustrated playing on a beer league team.
If the teams really wanted to set a precedent, they would sit the players for the whole year.

Big difference between the Oilers and Senators. First, Edmonton has nowhere near the depth and skill as the Sens. If Comrie is in the Oilers current line-up, they are much better. If Havlat is in Ottawa's line-up, they are better for sure, but its not as crucial as it is for the Oilers with Comrie. Second, Comrie has 'asked' for a trade, according to rumours, Havlat has done no such thing and really wants to be in Ottawa. Lastly, Ottawa is not doing anything wrong. They are playing by the CBA rules accordingly. You can't fault Havlat for what he is doing, he's playing by the rules as well to negeotiate a contract, but he was only guarenteed a 10% qualifying offer and rejected that. Ottawa has offered at least a 100% raise on a player who has the potential to be a superstar(IMO), which I don't think is unreasonable.
