Default Sens make final offer to Havlat

The Sens can ice a pretty deep team, but having Havlat's scoring touch makes them that much more lethal. (File)

Senators make final offer to Havlat

Perhaps Havlat should call Alexei Yashin and ask him how tough the Senators can be in contract negotiations.

The Ottawa Senators have offered restricted free agent Martin Havlat a new contract and given the winger a 24-hour deadline in which to accept, Sportsnet has learned.

Havlat has until puck-drop (7 p.m. ET) of Thursday's home opener against the Montreal Canadiens to accept the deal. If Havlat does not accept the terms, the offer will be withdrawn by the club and GM John Muckler will have to look at other options. Trading Havlat does not appear to be an option at this point.

In 67 games with the Senators last season, Havlat recorded 59 (24 goals, 35 assists).

thoughts?? doesnt give many details.

This is simply a bargaining ploy by the Sens. I'm sure if Havlat comes back and signs a contract 2 weeks into the season, then Ottawa would accept him.

First off all, Yashin was under contract and was holding out...big difference. Second, Ottawa always welcomed Yashin back and they did after an arbitrator ruled he owed them another year. You have to be pretty naive to believe that they will discount Havlat for the whole season if he doesn't sign by tomorrow night.

I like Havlat..he is a good player

I'd say he should play this year for the projected salary. Prove himself, that he can play at that level for another year.

BUT..I think Muckler will make a mistake if he doesn't sign him. Havlat had many points in the playoffs..and is very valuable in the playoffs.
