The Ottawa Senators may be talking to restricted free agent Martin Havlat but the conversation may be short.
According to the Ottawa Sun, the Senators have offered the unsigned winger a one-year deal worth $1.2 million as the two sides try to come to an agreement before the season.
While Havlat's agent, Allan Walsh would not confirm the details of the offer, he told the newspaper his client has not reponded to the offer as yet.
Since Havlat's last offer reportedly approached $5 million over two years, it is doubtful the offer will be accepted.
Last season, Havlat scored 24 goals and added 34 assists for 59 points in 67 games, fourth best on the team.
Havlat wants $2.4 million, the Sens offer $1.2 million, exactly half of what Havlat wants. Hmmm, negotiation strategy or smart thinking by the Sens management. Need to keep those salaries down or else the team will go bankrupt again.
Good to see some smart fiscal management starting to occur in the year before the old CBA runs out.
I say give Havlat $1.8 million a year and if he says no, well he can take a flying leap at a rolling doughnut.

If 1.2 is enough for Kariya then why not Martin
Keep in mind that after 4-5 years at 10 million, Kariya certainly has more money in the bank then Havlat. Kariya was fortunate to play a good part of his career when salaries were out of control. Havlat, under a new CBA might not have that luxury, so he's trying to scrape every cent before a new CBA is imposed, but we shall see. Since Kariya has all that money, he doesn't need it and only want's to play for a ring.

In Kariya's case the real reason is of course MONEY. His $1.2-million US contract is a gigantic pay cut from the $10 million he earned last season and is under the $1.79 million league average salary ON PURPOSE.
The reason is that Kariya, at 28, would then qualify for Group 5 unrestricted free agency next summer because he would be a 10-year NHL veteran making less than the league average salary.
Really, I think what he did was really stupid if it was to retain his staus of UFA next summer. Heading into a CBA strife, it would have made more sense to try and line up his contract to be guarenteed for 3-4 years or whatever at a higher salary. He's taking a huge risk if they put on a salary cap. There may not be one as well, but that's a pretty dangerous manoevure on Kariya's part IMO. He'll never get that same money again. Period.
just give him what he wants, there owner's a billionair
Yah you could do that if you want to turn this team into another NYR. Look where paying players whatever they want got the rangers? The sens are a smart hockey club, and they know the value of players... Overpaying a player doesn't accomplish much, and it just makes the rest of the players on the team expect the same treatment whether they deserve it or not.

i think what havlat wants is the leagues market value for what other players in the league are getting. in comparison to the #'s he putting up. as opposed to what the norm is for the low bugdet sens. hes not asking for insane amounts, not that i know of.
