OTTAWA (CP) - The Ottawa Senators have traded winger Peter Schaefer to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran winger Shean Donovan.

The move will save the Senators space under the salary cap.

Schaefer has three years and US$6.7 million left on his deal while Donovan has one year left at $925,000.

The 30-year-old Schaefer had 12 goals and 34 assists in 77 games with the Senators last season.

I guess this will solidify Donovan's position on the fourth line, most likely with Patrick Eaves, and McAmmond as the obvious there. However now there are huge holes on the second line, it's too bad this couldn't have been taken care of a couple weeks ago and we could have kept Comrie in the fold and would have had a decent secondary scorer on the team.

Default Ottawa Senators Acquire Shean Donovan from Boston Bruins for Peter Schaefer

OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has acquired right-winger Shean Donovan from the Boston Bruins for left-winger Peter Schaefer.

The 32-year-old graduate of Brian Kilrea’s Ottawa 67’s enters his 13th NHL season, and the Senators become his seventh NHL team. Donovan joined the Bruins in July 2006, recording six goals, 11 assists and 56 penalty minutes over 76 games. He missed six games to ankle and knee injuries.

In 12 NHL seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Atlanta Thrashers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames and Bruins, he has played 774 regular-season games, accumulating 100 goals, 114 assists and 558 penalty minutes. Donovan also adds 11 points (5-6) during 43 post-season games, including the 24 games played during the Flames’ run against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2004 Stanley Cup finals.

Donovan enjoyed his best offensive NHL season with Calgary in 2003-04 when he recorded career season highs of 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points.

The 6-foot-2, 209-pound native of Timmins, Ont., was drafted by San Jose as its second pick, 28th overall, in 1993 and turned professional in the 1994-95 season, after completing his four-year junior career with the Ontario Hockey League’s 67’s.

Donovan has also represented Canada in international competition, winning the gold medal at the 1995 world junior championship and again at the 1997 world men’s championship.

In four seasons with the Senators, Schaefer scored 53 goals and added 105 assists while recording 130 penalty minutes in 315 regular-season games. The left-winger added five goals and 15 assists in 53 playoff games. The native of Yellow Grass, Sask., has played in a career total of 493 NHL games between the Vancouver Canucks and Senators, collecting 89 goals, 144 assists and 180 penalty minutes.

SHEAN DONOVAN, Right wing, shoots right, 6’2”, 209 lbs.
Born: Jan. 22, 1975 (Timmins, Ont.)
Drafted: San Jose's second-round pick, 28th overall, in the 1993 NHL entry draft
Transactions: Traded to Colorado from San Jose with 1998 first-round draft pick (Alex Tanguay) for Mike Ricci and a 1998 second-round draft pick (Jaroslav Kristek), Nov. 21, 1997. Traded to Atlanta from Colorado for Rick Tabaracci, Dec. 8, 1999. Claimed off of waivers by Pittsburgh, March 15, 2002. Traded to Calgary from Pittsburgh for Mathias Johansson and Micki DuPont, March 11, 2003. Signed by Boston as a free agent, July 2, 2006. Traded from Boston to Ottawa for Peter Schaefer, July 17, 2007.

Eaves isn't signed yet, not sure how much the arbitration hearing will award him? I can't believe it would be any more than $2M at the most.
I don't think it would have mattered what offers Ottawa would have given Comrie, I don't think he wanted to stay in Ottawa?

Donovan should be a good addition for Ottawa, but I do hate seeing Shaefer leave!! They are the same type of players.

Eaves is under contract for .942 for the next season and is an RFA after. Kelly is due for arbitration along with Schubert and Emery.

But ya couldn't agree with you more about Schaefer I loved the guy but he was too pricey for a .4 points per game average. This better open the door to get another top 6 guy in or else we might be in some trouble. You can consider that the 3 arbitrations will probably take up at least 6-7 mill in cap space. But that still leaves around 3 mill to sign somebody, but who is really left? It's going to have to happen through trade, if it doesn't happen this team is gonna be relying heavily on the big 3, probably too heavily.

Ya, your right, for some reason, don't know why, I always get Kelly and Eaves mixed up??? DUH

I do the same with Briere and Drury, maybe that won't happen now that they are on different teams?? Have no idea why? When they play on the ice it's OK, I'm just weird, that's all!!!

Couldn't agree with you more though, we better get something done, because we CAN NOT rely on the big 3 to carry the team all season!!

I wouldn't be totally surprised if Saprykin might be considered for a 1 year contract to add a little speed and scoring punch for cheap. I realize this is far off of Murray's size and strength plan but I don't know how else he is expecting to fill the void. And if this is all to clear cap space for Heatley and Spezza I don't know how this team will be able to have any depth at all in the forward position in the future. Because those guys are going to demand huge sums of cash, like it or not. Anyways...

Ya no kidding just look how Tampa has played the past 2 seasons, using 1 1/2 lines lol

It sucks to see Schaefer leave though, but I agree with KrazyTea costs way to much for the amount of points he got.

I was reading somewhere, I think it was the Toronto Star? But anyways it said that if Heatley has another 50 goal, 100 point season he could be worth at least $9 million! Believe it?

Ya I more then believe it. We could be looking at another front-end loaded contract the likes of which we have seen Vanek & Gomez sign just these past few weeks. I have the feeling that Murray will actually be doing the reverse and a more normal contract standard, by going into increasing yearly salaries. The difference between the Sens and these other contracts is that the Sens are strapped for cap space now and still have a team here that can be successful if he can keep those parts here for cheap now then more success can be made now and during the rebuilding years be able to build around the team and pay for past successes then. But I have the feeling that only 1 of these guys will be around come the following season. I don't know who is going to fill the voids but if we look at the Anaheim style champions, it's not a fully loaded team, but rather loaded with size and strength. I don't know what I'm yammering about any more I kinda of went all over the place so I'm just gonna shut up soon. But ya Heatley will be seeing some big numbers, it depends on what he wants to do but if both Spezza and Heatley take discounts that put em around $16 mill as a duo and the cap continues to increase and the Sens can compete with that cap. Well some things may happen to keep these guys around then. I'll shut up now.

Murray says that he will try and use Vermette on the second line and maybe Eaves will be there also. Yet there is still not clear top 6 winger, and this can not only hurt the 5 on 5 play, it will also hurt the powerplay. Who can jump on the second PP and contribute BIG numbers specifically? You can sign Heatley to a long-term contract but there still must be some balance on the team.
