Default Stanley Cup OK after slightly dented during celebrations at Detroit eatery

NHL spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur said the Cup got a slight dent Friday after some players took the trophy to Cheli's Chili Bar, a downtown restaurant owned by Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios.
Mansur says dent was smoothed out, and the trophy was expected to keep making the rounds.

This is how the Wings treat the cup
Yeah the cups ok but it's the fact that they dented it in the first place, pisses me off!

You're hilarious. The Cup getting a little dent pisses you off? Thats hardly the worst that has happened to it. I'm willing to bet that something similar happens every year.

Glad that the Cup is okay. But wingsnut is right, that isn't the worst thing that has happened to it in all the time it has been around.

I'm not really that pissed, just wanted to get conversation going. From what I hear the NHL has three cups total, is that truth or fiction?

I know that there is 2, one that stays in the HHOF, and one that goes around with the players for the summer. I'm not sure what the 3rd one would be for.

The Cup takes more abuse than any trophy ever made. I'm sure plenty of people on this board have hoisted it. I know I have. That's why it's unequaled in sports. We've hoisted the same trophy as Messier, Howe, Gretzky, etc.

To the best of my knowledge, the original Cup (Cup only, not the bands underneath) stays in the Hall of Fame. The original Cup was replaced I think sometime in the 40's or 50's.

I've never heard of a third one. Maybe an emergency replacement?

This is not the worst that has happened to the cup. At all. I have a book that documents all the crazy things that have happened to it. Why our very own Kris Draper took it tubing, and while having it the cup actually fell off (not the tube; plus the cup had a life jacket on). He had to weld the darned thing back together.

Also: I have touched the cup, but I don't find it appropriate to hoist it. That honor, in my opinion, is only for those who have gone through the effort to win it.

The cup didn't even go with players until the 80's, it was tradition started by the Oilers that each player and coach would get it for a day during the off season.

Its true - they have 3 cups. The original 1893 one. The one they prsent to the players. And another one they exhibit when the presentation cup isnt availiable.

I've hugged the cup and had my pic taken with it but garb is right - i wouldnt hoist it either.
