What choice does the NHL have? If they air the game in the late afternoon, then they compete against Nascar, which is a ratings giant. If they play the game at night, they compete against basketball and baseball. Even with NBA ratings down, they get more viewers than hockey does.
I don't think it's an effort to cook the books, so to speak, but really just an effort to maximize total viewership.

Havign the games when they do, no fans will be watching, they'll be outside enjoying the good weather. The only thing the league will get with really early games is **** ratings, which it seems the fools are the helm are quite happy with.
The NHL has already proven that they can,. when providing a quality product (which some games in the playoffs might be a bit shaky for that requirement) that they can compete and beat the incumbents. This year's game in Buffalo anyone? They just ahve to have the balls (and a real television contract) to get the job done.
I wouldn't hold my breath of that happening soon.
