As Lossy said, no one bitches about Smyth, nope, he's a good Canadian hockey player. What about when Bertuzzi was making a living in front of the net? How about Glen Anderson....or am I dating myself there? Shall I continue? Tim Kerr anyone?

The difference is that guy used to take cross checks to the head, slashes, punches and pushes from the goaltenders and these things were all acceptable play if you wanted to stand in front of the net. Now you get guys like Holmstrom who stand in front of the net unmolested not being touched cause penalties are so easy to take and teams like the wings can score so easy on the power-play when guys can't hook on or barely even take the body without having to worry about taking a penalty.
Glen Anderson has a bad back these days from all the crosschecks he used to take, and so are many of the players from before the stupid instigator rule and the push over penalties.

Yup it is. Your point is taken.

He didn't hook or hold, and didn't take a hand off his stick, nor did he even have his stick off the ice: he had his opponent's stick pushed down with his own stick. When I was a kid, a defenseman would have been congratulated for making a hell of a clean defensive play. Now? That's a damn penalty.
Please tell me that we haven't entered a time where many people think it's dirty or penalty-worthy to legally screen the goaltender.
One little point to disagree about: Glenn Anderson made his living driving to the net, not hanging out in front of it.

That's right.
How about Tkachuk before he got "heavy"
Cam Nealy....

Fair enough that's a difference. I think you're giving Holmstrom the short end of the stick if you think he hasn't gone through that. His calling card has always been standing in front of the net on the Wings' powerplay. He's been doing that regularly since '98-'99 when he first played 82 games. Smyth played 82 games for the first time in '96-'97. So I don't think it's right to say Holmstrom and Smyth have taken an absolutely different level of punishment in front of the net because of a two year difference.
Holmstrom was primarily a powerplay specialist at the time whereas Smyth was playing five on five with Edmonton, but now it makes no difference how much easier it is to stand in front of the crease. Holmstrom has the same right to that space as Ryan Smyth, Jonathon Cheechoo, Scott Niedermayer, and Niklas Hjarlmarsson do.

Franzen gets close as well. Take a look.

Like one of the other people said that what holmstrom does isnt screening, thats interference.

His crease is all he gets. If you can't make a save in there then you need to go back to the minors.

Ummm no he doesn't? This is one of the only times I've seen the ref wave off a goal. Care to cite a lot of examples?

oh ok. My bad.
some posters must have been ridiculous here then.
well you wont find that about me. I have and always will be a good forum member. (guess thats why I have a moderator job at another forum)
I do love this forum. It seems to accomodate everyone of my interests.
Think I will be spending most of my internet time here. xD
and sit back and have a couple Molson Canadian beer )
oh and btw I have seen other goals waved off because of Holmstrom. And have heard other fans discuss it they say Holmstrom does get his share of wings goals waved off.
Franzen's been out with an injury. Havent had too many opportunities to look at him.
