The projected top line for Russia is Ovechkin - Datsyuk - Kovalchuk, because Datsyuk comes back and plays defense. It's been that way for about a year now.

Clearly Malkin would make the line more dangerous in the offensive zone, but Datsyuk gives them defensive presence up the middle. Much like Fedorov did when he centered Bure and Mogilny.

It's quite obvious which line I voted for. Oh, now they have 1!

WHy wouldn't they put Kovalev a natural RW with Dats and OVey and then have Kovy and Malkin as a crazy #2?

Because with Malkin they're already going to have a crazy second line. The Russians do have a lot of top end offensive firepower. Semin and Malkin together could be a pretty crazy second line as well.

I'm not even sure that Kovalev makes the Russian Olympic team with the amount of young offensive talent they have and the fact that he's not great enough defensively to contribute on a checking line. Who knows.

I'd definitely give players like Alexei Tereshchenko, Sergei Mozyakin, Danis Zaripov, and Aleksay Morosov good long looks to make the Russian Olympic team.

BURE / OVECHKIN
Cause (you can see it also in this forum topic) many people say that Bure was the best pure goal scorer all-time (also when we compare him with Ovie). He has only 5 seasons with more than 70 games and always shoot down 50 goals mark and three times that was also best in league.

FEDOROV / MALKIN (IMO even Datsyuk is better than Malkin)
Cause Fedorov was maybe the most complete player in hockey history. He could do everything and he could do it like nobody else. He can score 50 goals. His passes was same level like Malkin. He scored 50 goals and 120 points and in same season won Selke... Bah, tell me when will be this repeated by Malkin. Fedorov´s faceoff was great - look at Malkin´s percentage. With Coffey one of the best skaters in NHL history. Fedorov can play high offensive centre, can play two-way centre, can play defense-first center, can play "quarterback" on powerplay and can play like defensman! (do you remember his time in columbus?)
Victory 5-4 in overtime and five goals from same stick..Was it Malkin or Fedorov?

MOGILNY / KOVALCHUK
This time I agree the Kovalchuk is a little bit better than Mogilny but there are some reason why (culture shock after iron courtain for mogilny), but I like Kovalchuk for his consistency. Still 76 goals in 77 games is season which Kovalchuk will never have.
