Overall percentage doesn't matter so much to me as much as percentage at important times during the game. Helps decide who's going out there to take a faceoff when you're down by one or defending a one goal lead.
I don't have the numbers on this computer, but about 5 or 6 years ago, I ran correlation coefficients on faceoff percentages to see if there was any relationship to things like GF, GA, PP%, PK%, etc, etc, etc. There was never anything in the numbers that suggested anything close to a relationship.
That said... That was before the rule changes regarding faceoffs after penalty calls, so the results could be different now.
Point is, if you win the faceoff you give your team control of the puck.

You ask Ovechkin if he would trade his Art Ross and Richard Trophies, to trade places with Sidney Crosby last June.
Face-off percentages for individual players aren't nearly as lopsided as one might think. I don't know how long the stat has been kept but I've only heard actual percentages for players quoted on telecasts the past 5 or 10 years. Maybe it's different in Canada. But after hearing for years that this player or that player is great on face-off's I expected to hear winning percentages of 75% or 80%, but anything over 55% is relatively rare.

I remember Brind'amour leading the league with high 50's or maybe 60-61%.
Sunding was usually near the top of the league with a mid 50's %.

Faceoff in the opposing zone, twenty seconds to go, you're on a 6-4 power play and you're one goal behind? Pretty damn important.

yeah, it all depends on the circumstances, but if it's the beginning of the game, a faceoff leads to puck control which could lead to a goal, so it indirectly changes momentum or builds it up
