Default Hockey rules

I've never played hockey, and I'm new to following NHL games so I'm not sure of all the rules. Anyway did anyone see tonight's Montreal - Ottawa game? I was sure that when the second period ended Ottawa was ahead 2-1. I seem to remember when I started watching the game on RDS that it was tied 1-1 then I saw another Ottawa goal, putting it 2-1. But when I came back for the beginning of the third period it appeared to be back to being tied 1-1.

There was a delayed penalty to Kovalev on the play and the referee judged that the Canadiens touched the puck and the whistle had blown before the goal.

Welcome to the fan-dom of the greatest sport on earth! Except for maybe women's beach volleyball but I digress.
