Who has the best defense in the NHL?
The Ducks have Pronger, Niedermayer, Schneider and Beauchemin as top 4, but it drops after.
The Flames have Phaneuf, Regehr, Aucoin, Sarich, Warrener and Vandermeer as a top 6. Solid.
Chicago has greatly improved and they have Campbell, Seabrook, Keith, Barker and Sopel for top 5.
Colorado has Hannan, Liles, Clark, Salei, Foote and Leopold. Not too shabby!
Detroit has the best defenseman in the game in Lindstrom, along with Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall and Lilja.
Minnesota has Johnsson, Burns, Schultz, Zidlicky, Skoula and Bergeron. Pretty darn good if you ask me!
The Rangers have Rozsival, Redden, Kalinin, Mara and Staal.
The Penguins have Gonchar, Whitney, Orpik, Sydor, Eaton, Gill and Letang. Not a bad 7!
The Sharks have improved with Boyle, Blake, McLaren, Lukowich, Vlasic, Murray and Ehrhoff.
Vancouver's top 6 is as solid as any, even with the loss of Bourdon, with Bieksa, Salo, Ohlund, Mitchell, Krajicek and Edler.

I hate to be the first one to post, and therefore the first one to come across as a homer, but I said Detroit.
Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Ericsson/Lebda-Lilja/Chelios/Meech
Size and physicality is there, though some seem to think thats not true. But the speed and quick puck-movement is as well. Nearly all of those are more than sound defensively, outside of maybe Lebda and a few gaffes from Lilja.
I'm sure none of you are surprised by my answer.

I agree wholeheartedly with your answer.
Chelios still has some gas left in the tank, and is an excellent PKer. I say he is top 4 on most teams strictly from a defense only standpoint.
Lidstrom is THE best defenseman in the NHL since Bourque, and has been the best blueliner for the last 10 years. He is not only great, he is a head and shoulders above anyone else. I would take Lidstrom over both Niedermayer + Beauchemin for the same price any day of the week. Best defensive Dman in the NHL AND offensive Dman in the NHL.
Rafalski himself is no slouch, and could be a #1 Dman on many teams. He is a shade below the Pronger/Niedermayer level, but is up there with the Markov's/Timonen's on the solid two way tier. Brings the transition game.
Kronwall is just great. Love the physicality and the shot blocking. Solid Dman with a few offensive tools that still are growing.
Stuart is a good Dman. Not on the elite tier, but a solid 3/4 guy. Hits, blocks shots, plays in any situation......
Lilja is a good Pker, hits, blocks TONS of shots.
I don't see any blueline being as good as Detroit's next year unless some young players really hit their grooves.
Anaheim has the next best top 2 combo(Nieds + Prongs), but for Depth?........Schneider is getting older and slower every season. Beauchemin is ok..........The rest isn't pretty.
Calgary's is solid. Probably about even with San Jose's(Now)

Hey this is my first post ever!
Anywho I would have to say probably San Jose with what they have done in the off season so far.
Them or Detroit.
Detroit has a solid defense as well.

I would have to go with wingsy on this one. The only competition the Wings have in this feild is the Ducks, but the Ducks lack a depth out of the top 4 that makes the Wings look so much better.

I'll go with Detroit as well, but I think Chelios might finally retire.
Even still, from 1 through 6 they are the best in league IMO.
