Default Craig Rivet hit on Brendan Morrow

Why no talk about this vicious hit by Craig Rivet on Dallas's captain? It happened last night. I guess Rivet wasn't wearing the right uniform in order for this to be talked about on end...

Wow, I never saw that Because I didn't see last nights game.

Should have been a 5 minute major and game misconduct.

I have a question, what the hell was he doing in the corner facing the boards? Sure Rivet shoulda had a 2 minutes but still the league needs to tell these idiots to protect themselves. Watch vets like Kovalev, Jagr and so on go into the corners, you'll rarely to never catch them their back turned, they'll have their backs braced against the boards.

I blame minor hockey and Junior hockey, every single coach has input the doctrine of turning the backs to the guy to "protect the puck" and "draw a penalty" so much you see Kids like Bergeron keep that reflex into the big leagues like the NHL where it hits much harder then Junior hockey.

There is a lack of respect but it's not just from the guys dishing out the hits.

The NHL Front office is really to blame since they'll punish some, let others go and do nothing to fix the problem (they're not even publicly acknowledging that there is a problem).

Solutions?
-Not being afraid to fine teams, coaches and players.

-Have a set formula to dishing out suspensions (and dropping the "he didn't really mean it" crap).

-Dropping the instigator rule, this video shows why, rivet got 5 for fighting, they other guy 2, 5 and 10 for defending his player.

-Warnings, public warnings and fines to teams and coaches that repetitively use the tactic of turning their backs to draw penalties and immunity of body contact.

-Direct the refs to be more lenient for hooking, holding and roughing calls when players use their bodies along the boards to protect the puck while facing the boards. That way you have other means to remove the guy in the corner with the puck then just using your body momentum (and driving a guy's head in the dashers).

-The rubber dashers Don Cherry proposed, it's inexpensive and a good idea, won't guaranty no one will get hurt but it's added protection that just can't be bad, but yeah bettman didn't think of it so it's not good

-Teams suing the NHL for the loss of a player (hence money), and players suing for lack of job security and protection. I REALLY don't like this idea but when all else fails it's the only way to get the yes men and the midget to actually do something.

ps. Sure loads of people will disagree with my solutions, but these are usually the ones to cry about lack of respect and alarmists who says someone will die but never really have a solution to put on the table.

That would be boarding and a missed call by an official. You could argue he should have received a five minute major and a game misconduct because Morrow ended up with a nice cut and lost a little blood.

At most, Rivet should have received nothing more than five and a game. Morrow knew the hit was coming and was in poor position to receive the hit. Rivet simply boarded him hard, resulting in a cut and some blood. Hardly the end result of a cross ice charge nor did it result in an unconscious or badly hurt player. Injury is a key part of the penalty. Morrow lays around on ice unconscious, Rivet's hit gets reviewed by the NHL. Morrow gets up and skates around with nothing but a cut, Rivet gets a fighting major for introducing Daley to his fist.

Or, we could step back and ask:

How many people actually saw the game between the Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks, let alone the hit?

When was is aired EST? 9:00? 10:00? What about the hit? 9:30PMEST - 10:30 or somewhere around there?

I really have no idea, and I'm sure most others don't either.

That's just the reality of the situation. We're not in front of our TV sets or computers 24/7.

Mr. McGoo must have been officiating the game. Had to be at least a double minor there. He went in there with some speed, not like he was just pinning him from behind, so I would say a 5 Minute majore for boarding could have been warrented.

Horrible hit. This BS about Morrow knowing the hit was coming is false.

Morrow was playing the puck along the boards in the corner, which must be done with your back turned if youre a lefthander in the "left" corner.

Horrible, horrible hit. Just wish Daly wouldve represented a little better in kicking the living **** out of Rivet.

They say hockey players ahve long memories, though. Morrow is no slouch in the physical department.

Look closely, you see him peak over his shoulder. Besides you stand with the puck in the corner you have to be an idiot not to expect a hit.

If he was "playing the puck" he would have gone in there and out with the puck, not stand there facing the boards.

The hit merits a penalty, maybe a 5 for the rest of the game but nothing more IMO

I agree that his teammate should of dropped the gloves more aggressively but Rivet is old school and knows to defend his actions.

Going "hommagawd this is so horrible" like a menopausal mommy doesn't really serve anything but to make it seem like he went after the guy with a chainsaw. It's really getting tiresome this alarmist attitude, back in the day they woulda just called up 5 enforcers the next time they played the sharks and fans woulda been calling for that anyways, now it's all about being "nice and respectful" to each other and "there's no place for these things" and all that bull crap.

Trust me if this was the old NHL Rivet first of all wouldn't even of thought about boarding Morrow for the simple fact that he would of "gotten it back" and if he did he WOULD of gotten it back and every other players in the league would learn from HIS mistake.

The bucks these guys are paid they have more then enough in the bank to get by while serve a suspension (vacation). But a closed eye for two weeks really sticks in your mind.

Umm...he was playing the puck because it was cycled back to him. I dont think its worth a suspension though...but of course if we want consistency then he should get 10 games.
