Bruins' Bergeron taken off on stretcher

BOSTON - Boston Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron was taken off the ice on a stretcher Saturday after a scary hit from behind by Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Randy Jones. Bergeron was chasing after a loose puck in the Flyers zone late in the first period when Jones closed in on him and drove his head into the boards with his forearm. The 22-year-old crumpled to the ice and lay on his back motionless while the Bruins went after Jones, 26.

Medical personnel cut away Bergeron's jersey and shoulder pads as they worked on him, placing his neck in a brace.
They placed him on a board and then onto a stretcher, his legs taped together and his arms folded across his chest. There was little sign of movement. The game was delayed some 15 minutes.

</td></tr> </tbody></table> There was no immediate word on his condition.Jones was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct at 16:07.
Jones' hit is the latest violent incident involving the Flyers this season.

Prospect Steve Downie was suspended 20 games after a hit to the head of Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond in an exhibition contest. Then on Oct. 10 in Vancouver, Jesse Boulerice laid a vicious cross-check to the mouth of Canucks centre Ryan Kesler that resulted in a 25-game suspension. After the Boulerice incident, the Flyers found themselves fighting off an emerging perception that they were a team full of out-of-control goons. "I think we're in agreement that there's no place in the game for this anymore," general manager Paul Holmgren said Oct. 12. "I do think it was an isolated incident."

Added head coach John Stevens: "It's almost implied that's the direction we're going when it couldn't be further from the truth."
Man all of this controversy swirling around Philly so early on this season. I'm trying to find a video for it

Man it would be funny to see three Flyers suspended long term at the sametime....mind you they all deserve it as it was cheap shots

If you think Jones is a dirty player, than you are seriously retarded. It wasnt on purpose, and its not really like he was "driving his head into the boards." He just hit the guy and it was unfortunate. Im really tired of people worrying about how terrible those dirty Flyers are instead of a young star who was just seriously injured.

And if Jones is suspended, it will be even more undeserved than the Downie suspension. Jones isnt a dirty player, it was just an unlucky incident.

You're saying Downie shouldn't have been suspended?

No, he is saying that Randy Jones is nothing like Downie and Boulerice. He's right, Randy is nothing like that. He's a good kid. He didn't do that intentionally. Nine times out of ten the guy stays upright and doesn't put on the brakes at the last second. I hope Patrice is ok and I hope this doesn't destroy Randy's confidence, he has had a good season for us so far.

The key is intent to injure, and that is lacking here. I feel his on ice penalty should be punishment enough. At some point these players have to take responsibility for the way they go into the corners.

I don't think there was intent to injure, but he still deserves to be suspended for it. Not a giganto-suspension, but still. Hitting from behind is one of those things that is hammered into peoples' heads over and over and over, and for good reason considering how incredibly dangerous it is. You don't hit the guy in the numbers, period. This isn't a case where Bergeron turned at the last second, and you have to come down on the guy.

oh God no, he deserved a suspension. Just not one on par with Chris Simon or Todd Bertuzzi. 5-10 was what I was thinking, since he was just caught up in the game. But if they were setting a precedent, Id be fine with it. Its just that they only seem to be taking things out on the Flyers.

@MW-
Again, I dont think this is something to be suspended for. Im more concerned about intent, and how far out of your way youre going to hurt someone. So no, I am not a fan of suspending Jones.

BUT, if they are going to be consistent with it, then I am fine with a 1-5 game suspension. My problem is that this happens all the time in the NHL...it usually results in a man being pinned up against the boards, but due to the awkward positioning of Bergeron and Jones not taking notice, it resulted in a serious injury. I suppose a small 1 game suspension is deserved simply for not being aware, but thats it.

Id also like to say thank God that Patrice only suffered a concussion and broken nose...I simply could not enjoy the game after seeing Bergeron lay motionless on the ice...hopefully his recovery goes well.

Everyone knows that Bergeron should be suspended for getting in Jones' way. How DARE he do that. The flah-er rule book clearly states on page 1 that the flah-ers can do whatever they want and no penalties will ever be called on them. In fact, it's in the Constitution. It was written by Ben Franklin who by the way was a flah-er fan.
