Veteran Simon next for Isles?

As the Islanders' prospects assembled Monday at Iceworks for the opening of a weeklong minicamp, potential spots on the NHL roster for the 2006-07 season were dwindling.
Along with the free-agent additions of forward Mike Sillinger and defensemen Brendan Witt and Tom Poti, the Islanders are believed to be close to signing veteran winger Chris Simon. The 34-year-old Simon, who was with the Rangers for most of the 2003-04 season before being traded to the Calgary Flames, grew up idolizing Islanders coach Ted Nolan, a fellow Ojibwa Indian, and played junior hockey for him with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL) in 1991-92.
In 677 NHL games, Simon has 133 goals and 1,690 penalty minutes.
He fills a tough-guy role, but has also shown throughout his career to have a scorer's touch. He brings more of the character and grit Nolan and general manager Neil Smith wanted to add to the Islanders' roster.
