NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CP) - Jordin Tootoo of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, has been named to the Nashville Predators' roster and can become the first player of Inuit descent to play in a National Hockey League game on Thursday when the Predators open the season against Anaheim.
The 20-year-old winger was told by the Predators' coaching staff Monday that he had earned one of 13 roster spots at the forward position.
The five-foot-nine, 195-pound Tootoo scored his first NHL pre-season goals on Friday and Saturday, but had already earned his team's approval by throwing his trademark powerful checks and drawing penalties.
He was a fourth-round draft pick, 98th overall, of the Predators in 2001.
Tootoo was a fan favourite in Halifax at the 2003 world junior hockey championship because of his barely-controlled style of play and his unique background.
i live in winnipeg so one day i went down to the paw manitoba (ocn blizard) to see him play, and in brandon (wheat kings) i saw him play hes a crowd pleaser, and a scorer too,he played with grit for last years canada team, good luck to him
again...another great rookie player that will spark his team....Tootoo will have a great season in his rookie year and the fact his the first inuit to play is pretty cool.
I saw this story on him in the news. He's from a small town in Nunavut called Rankin Inlet with a Population of 2, 500 people. It showed all of his friends and how they used to laugh at him when they played hockey together, and now look at him. oh and he jsut got his first point: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/shown...ntent=h101649A
he was the leading scorer of the whl with the wheat kings and playing for team canada last year he nailed layers into next week and hes 5'6
is that good enough?

Actually Erik Christensen (Drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins) of our very own Kamloops Blazers was the leading scorer of the WHL with 52 goals, 56 assists.
Although, just before TooToo left to tryout for the World Junior Championships, he was leading the scoring race. Down the long stretch, heading into playoffs.. he was non-existent for Brandon. But, that doesn't mean anything really.
TooToo is a passionate player, with fire and grit. The guy isn't afraid to take a hit, or give one. He'll run his mouth at just about anyone. He's one of those players that goes out every shift and gives his all, 110%.
Yah Tootoo's cool his wheat kings beat my warriors in the playoffs round 2 last year. Tootoo was a flopper, Tryin to get us penalties, but we came back from Losing by 2 we won like 8-7, Petr Jelinik Scored the OT goal, that was the most memorable game i've ever been to
