Nashville hopes to ride wave with California's Blum
Vancouver Giant defenseman Jonathon Blum (500K ) looks more like a skinny surfer hanging out at the beach waiting for the perfect set -- – true to his California roots -- rather than a smooth-skating blueliner that was selected by Nashville in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.
Blum, who hails from Rancho Santa Margarita, was selected at No. 23 and became the first California born and trained player to be taken In the first round.
It has been a long, and sometimes strange, journey for Blum, who was a seventh-round selection by Vancouver in the WHL Bantam Draft back in 2004. Now, because of his offensive capabilities and smooth skating stride, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Blum is considered a top-end prospect.
“He’s a smaller-type guy, but we believe he is wiry strong and uses his hockey sense to do everything in the game that is smart,” Predators assistant general manager Paul Fenton told The Tennesseean. “You don’t find players like that very often. That seems to be our trend. We look for smart players and he’s right up our alley.”
