Markov - All-time Habs legacy
I know this should be in the habs section but since I want more opinions I will post it in the popular section.
I was thinking about this this morning , trying to build an all-time habs team like im always doing again and again.
Markov is in Montreal since a lot of years...Sure he didnt win anything here but we can safely say that he was too young and the team was too weak to win anything before last year anyway.
Here's the lock in the Mtl all-time team on defense:
Doug Harvey
Larry Robinson ( Big 3 )
Serge Savard ( Big 3 )
Guy Lapointe ( Big 3 )
Emile Bouchard
Here's the spot.
I cant count Chelios = will never be remembered as a habs.
Desjardins was not top 10 in the NHL while he was here...
Does Markov takes the last spot considering he have 3 years left in his bargain contract?

If this was a team with say twenty years of history it's possible. With the habs? Hell no.
Granted I cnat' think of a person to fill said spot, although if I had access to my hockey tomes I'm sure I coudl find someone that woudl be more worthy then Markov, if not more then one.

Sprague Cleghorn
Tom Johnson
Jacques Laperriere
J.C. Tremblay
Chris Chelios
all 4 of those guys invariably come before Markov. Probably more if I actually started digging.
I know you said you wanted to not include Chelios, but his 7 years as a hab were far better than Markov's current 7 years.
On that list, After Chelios, J.C Tremblay is who I would say was the best. He is more known for jumping ship to the WHA sadly, but he played 13 years in Montreal, 11 of which were very good.
He was a Lidstrom type, who got better with age, and he left right in his prime, but he was terrific.
I am actually impressed that you added Butch Bouchard. The guy, by all accounts, was a tank and one of the better shutdown Defensemen.

Yeah your probably right about those guys , but liek I said Chelios is not enough of a Habs to be on my list. And I still doubt Johnson ever came close to the level of Markov last year.Laperriere and Tremblay I tend to agree but its close IMO.If Markov still play liek this until his contract end up and maybe even for more years no doubt he'll be higher than all these guys.
And for the Bouchard part , well I know my hockey history very well and I know Bouchard's statistics are ridiculous because he was an awesome defensive defenseman.Playing behind Harvey dont help a guy being known I guess.

Nah, Bouchard was a multiple time all star before Harvey ever showed up. He made his name well before he became Harvey's partner. Great Defenseman.
My father has been giving me a full attention lesson of Hockey History in the last few years. When I was younger in my early 20's, I really didn't care as much about the past, Now I just realized he has tons and tons of videotape of old games, etc and I am going ballistic watching them. I wish my father would post here, but he prefers the other site that I was banned from because there are more people and a bigger History section:(
As for Tom Johnson, he was better than Markov.
Johnson won a Norris trophy against the likes of Bill Gadsby, Doug Harvey, Pierre Pilote and Red Kelly and was top 5 in voting for the Norris trophy 3 separate times. All 4 of those names are among the top 20 best defensemen of all time.
Markov has not even come into true consideration for the trophy yet. His best finish was 6th, and he received no first place votes. His competition was Lidstrom, Phaneuf, Chara, Gonchar and Campbell. Other than Lidstrom, none of those guys even compare to Harvey, Pilote, Gadsby or Kelly.
If he keeps improving, Markov might be a factor in Norris voting after Lidstrom retires. As of now he is nowhere close to any of those guys

I'd give that spot to Cleghorn every day of the week. A fine offensive defenseman who was as mean a son of a bitch as ever put on skates.
If not him, Johnson.

I would put him second after Chelios too.
I think I would take J.C Tremblay over the others though
