MONTREAL -- Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Monday the signing of free agent right-winger Ryan Flinn to a one-year, two-way contract (2008-09). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Flinn has seven seasons of AHL experience along with three seasons in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings (2001-02, 2002-03 and 2005-06). In 2007-08, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound winger played in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons and the Hershey Bears, collecting four points (three goals, one assist) and 135 penalty minutes in 41 games.

The New Jersey Devils’ fifth-round selection, 143rd overall, at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Flinn joined the Edmonton Oilers organization as a free agent on July 17, 2007.

Flinn, 28, played four seasons in the QJMHL from 1996 to 2001, with Laval, Acadie-Bathurst, Halifax and Cape Breton.

HA! I didn't know they signed him....he's cousins with a close friend of mine.....hasn't seen much NHL ice of late nor will he in the near future I wouldn't think....maybe he'll find his offensive touch this season. ;-)

Although a bit off-topic, has anyone else noticed the size and toughness Gainey went to get this summer for both the Habs and Bulldogs, in spite of him and Carbo going on record at the deadline last year saying that they didn't need an enforcer? Flynn is 6'4" 235lbs, Laraque 6'3" 243lbs, Mike Glumac is 6'2" 200lbs, Chad Anderson is 6'2" 212lbs, Shawn Belle is 6'1" 220lbs, Alex Henry is 6'5" 220lbs...

Now knowing that Gainey is a member of the committee deciding on the rules in the NHL along with other GMs and members of the NHLPA, combined with the comment from the NHLPA at the end of last season saying that they wanted the instigator rule banished, I'm seriously wondering (and hoping) if we'll see the end of the most stupid rule in hockey soon... one can only hope!

The best decision makers are the ones who are able to observe results and admit they were wrong, some call it flip flopping but I call it being able to put your ego aside to make the best move for your team (or nation, or league etc, I nominated Gainey as league commish...)

And I,m thinking that they won't banish it (again ego, buttman has too big of an ego for his small head and will (has) never gone back on his dumb decisions. I,m guessing though that they'll tell the refs to lay off the "a 2 a 5 and a 10" [like when Souray went after armstrong and even though armstrong dropped his gloves first and only he threw punches Souray got 17 minutes of penalty and no armstrong got nothin']. It's just a dumb rule, especially if the refs won't properly protect players on the ice. Besides, the greater majority of hockey fans like a good fight and it's good for business)

If I'm not mistaken, Bettman doesn't decide on rules. It's a committee formed of NHL GMs, members of the NHLPA and Colin Campbell.

I remember when that gutless like pr*ck did that, he cheap shot Koivu and didn't get a damn thing for it....I was so proud of Souray, he handed Armstrong his a$$ and the look on Colby's ugly mug was priceless...I thought for sure he was going to sh*t in his pants.....Damn!!! I miss Souray.
