Habs took a run at Kovalchuk in 2001...
Well, I was watching NHL All Acess earlier today, it was featured on the Thrashers. It went back to the draft days for Heatley and Kovalchuk. On the Kovalchuk draft day, Wadell was talking to Montreal's GM at the time (whose name is escaping me) and said "Your package is the best on the table, but we've decided it's in our clubs intrests to keep this player".
So I guess my question is was there any buzz about this in Montreal at the time, and any idea what the offer may have been?

Yes there was. It was well reported even though the players involved in the trade talks were not mentioned. André Savard was the GM. The Habs were disappointed that the trade didn't go through.

Must have been something good on the table... lord knows what. This situation is kind of like when the leafs almost had Jarret Stoll.

I didn't know about this Kovalchuk thing. It's interesting to hear about deals that almost went through. Anyone remember when Eric Lindros was THIS close to becoming a Leaf.

If I remember correctly, Atlanta wanted Theodore + 1st Pick but Montreal offered another goalie (probably Garon?) + possibly the 1st pick.
Does anyone know who Mtl picked in 1st round that year ?

Man, its a good thing we didn't do that trade. It was Antropov(apparently the next star in Toronto..), Danny Markov, another decent defencemen, 1st rounder and cash... and philly rejected it. Mainly because Markov had injury troubles. Pretty ironic that eventually Markov did end up a flyer.

They picked Mike Komisarek, 7th overall. They also had Washington's first round pick that year, with which they chose Alexander Perezhoggin at the #25 spot. k:

Hm.. Komisarek and Theodore for Kovalchuk?
That's interesting to say the least. Komisarek will be a good defensemen if what I've heard is correct... top 2 potential? Add in that you had Garon in the ranks and were adding a guy whose going to be one of the best pure goal scorers in the league.. interesting.
John, what were the Leafs putting out for Jarret Stoll? (I'm assuming this was in 2000, when he was drafted by Calgary). Looking at him now, it looks like he'll be a two-way center that may or may not be able to score 20 at his peek, but will never be a first liner. He's probally a future captain as well.

Here's the deal.. I found it by accident a few months later
Markov
Zednik
Garon
2 st round pick(7th overall and 25th overall...turn out to be Komisarek and Perezhogin).
And Atlanta wanted Theodore instead of Garon.. wow.

Out of curiosity where did you find that ?
I'm glad the Habs didn't make that trade, Theodore although at times seems shakey he is ultimately one of the best goalies in the league and he will leed Danis into a stardem.
Zednik is a very streeky player but he will give you 25 - 30 goals a season, I believe he could get the Habs if playing with Koivu and another good solid winger 35- maybe 40 goals if lucky.
Markov is no doubt the most talented and skilled habs in the back, powerful shot, quick and could be physical if needed!
Komisarek will one day be the back bone of the Habs.
Perezoighan(sp) The guy obviously has potential, I'd love to see playing with the big club next year if everything goes well.
Garon , well good luck to him in LA but he did lead us into getting Bonk , our 3rd line center. That gives us much depth up the middle(something the Habs have been lacking for awhile; Koivu,Ribeiro(I believe he should be traded),Bonk, and Begin.
