MONTREAL (CP) - The Bob Gainey era in Montreal has now truly begun.

Gainey met with reporters after the game to defend oft-maligned defenceman Patrice Brisebois, who was booed every time he touched the puck after the midway point of the second period.

After scoring a goal in the third, Brisebois turned to the crowd and motioned with his hand for them to turn up the volume.

``We don't need those people, we don't want those people, they're jealous people, yellow people,'' Gainey said of the fans who booed Brisebois. ``I think they're a bunch of gutless bastards, to be honest.''



Brisebois has been a favourite of the Bell Centre boo birds for the last three seasons. His play over that time has been far from perfect, but it probably hasn't been bad enough to justify that kind of a sustained reaction from the fans.



Though the booing of Brisebois has been going on for a long time, this is the first time a member of the Canadiens organization has spoken directly to the fans about it.

``Our message to them is to stay away,'' Gainey said. ``We don't need you.''

A clearly frustrated Brisebois said he was happy someone was finally sticking up for him.

``I appreciate his support,'' he said. ``I've always said there are people who like me and appreciate me. I play for them, and my friends and family.''

what do you guys think? do you think gainey is in the right to talk back to the fans?

personally, I think its about time someone did stand up for the guy. sure, he makes a lot of mistakes for the money he makes, and is over rated. but no one deserves to be booed all the time. plus, he is playing well..so why boo him?

Haha gutless bastards classic. I think I'm going to like Gainey as a GM he talks the talk and he is right to talk back these ignorant *******s. Its fans like that that make me ashamed to be a French Canadian.

Bob Gainey is a recent graduate of the Brian Burke School of Media and Fan Relations. Now that Gainey has talked about rotten fans, his next step is find himself a reporter to hate (the Quebec equivalent of Tony Gallagher?).

Brisebois has always struck me as a floater who thinks he's owed something. At 4 million dollars, its understandable the fans resentment, but I don't condone the singling out of one player to constantly boo him ala Larry Murphy in Toronto, who goes on to help the Wings win 2 Cups. If the team is playing terribly, fine, boo the team, but not so much the individual. Brisebois as a player has alot to be desired for though, especially passes up the middle in his own zone and some shotty defensive marking earning him the nickname, "Breezebye"!!!
