Koivu out 3-4 weeks with sprained knee
9/22/2003
The Montreal Canadiens could begin the regular season without their captain.
An MRI examination on Koivu's right knee revealed that the veteran forward has a sprained ligament and will miss three to four weeks. Koivu may still be ready to begin the regular season on Oct. 9 in Ottawa.
Koivu suffered the injury when he was checked by Ottawa's Todd White on a Montreal power play in the seocnd period of Saturday's 4-3 exhibition loss to the Senators. Koivu left the game and didn't return.
Koivu appeared to be walking without difficulty after Saturday's game, but the team's medical staff ordered the MRI because he has had knee surgery in the past.
Koivu's career has been limited by injuries that have caused him to miss almost 200 games over the past six seasons. He missed 28 games in the 2000-01 campaign with a knee injury that required surgery. The year before, shoulder and knee injuries limited him to 24 games. He played 65 games in 1998-99 and 69 games in 1997-98. Koivu was leading the NHL in scoring in 1996-97 when he suffered a mid-season knee injury and played only 50 games. He played all 82 games last year and in his 1995-96 rookie season.
The five-foot-10, 180-pound centre also missed most of the 2001-02 season while undergoing treatment for cancer.
The Canadiens host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night and face the Boston Bruins in Manchester, N.H on Friday.

Jeez, just what Koivu and the Canadiens don't need right now.
One thing puzzles me though. How can he be out 3 - 4 weeks yet may still play the season opener in 16 days ( 2 and a bit weeks away).
