Default This week in Canadiens' history

August 18, 1977: Montreal makes a trade with St. Louis, sending forward Jimmy Roberts to the Blues. In return, the Canadiens receive St. Louis’ third pick in the 1979 Amateur Draft. The Canadiens used the pick to select Guy Carbonneau.

August 19th

August 19, 1994: After 13 seasons with the Canadiens, Guy Carbonneau is sent by Montreal to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Jim Montgomery. Montgomery, a Montreal native, would play just five games with the Canadiens in the 1994-95 season.

August 20th

August 20, 1992: Toronto and Montreal make a deal. The Canadiens ship Sylvain Lefebvre to the Maple Leafs and in return receive Toronto’s third round selection in the 1994 draft. Montreal used the pick to select Martin Belanger.

August 21st

August 21, 1912: Hall of Fame player and coach Hector “Toe” Blake is born in Victoria Mines, Ontario. Blake played his entire NHL career in Montreal and all but eight games with the Canadiens. Blake made his professional debut in the 1935 playoffs with the Montreal Maroons, but was traded to their cross-town rival for Lorne Chabot in February 1936. During the 1940s, Blake, Maurice Richard and Elmer Lach were known as the Punch line, and were one of the most dangerous lines in the NHL. While registering a personal-best 67 points in 1944-45, Blake helped linemate Richard to become the first 50-goal scorer in NHL history. He retired as a player following the 1947-48 season, but went on to find great success in his 13 seasons behind the Canadiens’ bench from 1955 to 1968.
August 21, 1981: Defenseman Serge Savard announces his retirement. Savard had played with the Canadiens his entire career, which had started in 1966.

August 22nd

August 22, 1972: The Canadiens send veteran defenseman Terry Harper to Los Angeles. In return, they pick up four future draft choices from the Kings: a second-round choice in the 1974 draft (used to select Gary MacGregor), a first and third choice in 1975 (Pierre Mondou and Paul Woods, respectively), and a first round pick in 1976 (Rod Schutt).
August 22, 1996: Nearly five years after the Canadiens sent him to New Jersey, the Devils trade Stephane Richer back to Montreal. The Canadiens send tough-guy Lyle Odelein to New Jersey in return. Richer played a little over a season before he was traded again, this time to Tampa Bay in January 1998.

August 23rd

August 23, 1952: Former center Dave Gardner is born in Toronto. Gardner started his NHL career with the Canadiens in 1972-73. With a surplus of offensive power on the team, Gardner appeared in just five games with the club and spent the rest of the season in the minors. The following year, he played in 31 games with Montreal but only notched one goal and 11 total points during that time. With little room for him in the lineup, the Canadiens traded him to the St. Louis Blues in March 1974.

August 24th

August 24, 1936: Former right-winger Murray Balfour is born in Regina, Saskatchewan. Balfour was a member of the Canadiens for two seasons, but only played in five games in that span. Balfour was traded to Chicago in return for cash in 1959. In 1965, at the age of 28, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Less than two months later, Balfour succumbed to his illness.
August 24, 1989: Canadiens’ and Montreal Forum President Ronald Corey announces the results of a study conducted by SNC Lavalin regarding the potential renovation and expansion of the Forum. A decision is made to not expand the Forum, and to initiate a new study examining the feasibility of building a separate, modern venue designed with the facilities required to meet the demands of a new generation of hockey fan.
