Who says golf is easy as hitting a golf ball? In fact, it's not. And that's my worry right now. You see, I've never played golf all my life. It may sound weird or unusual, knowing that golf should have been like a man's sport. But I don't play the game, and now my boss is asking me to go with him for some leisurely play over the weekend. I don't want to look like a jerk by then.
Well, I scavenged for some basic golf tips over the Net, but I'm not sure if this is all.
- Keep your head down.
- Don't try to kill the ball; swing nice and easy.
- Try to hit under the ball, not the ball itself.
- Hardly move your hips.
- Keep your knees slightly bent and keep them that way for the whole swing.

when you're standing to take your shot, you don't have to do this, but if you were to line a club up against your toes, where the club points is the general direction where the ball will go if you are able to hit it straight.
most of the pros use a grip where if you're right-handed, you're right hand will go in front of your left and you interlock the pinky on your right with your index finger on your left.

What? A proper hip turn is one of, if not the most, important aspect of a golf swing.
And as for hitting under the ball, it all depends on what kind of spin or what kind of shot you're trying to hit. That does not apply to all shots (hitting under the ball).

I think he meant try not to sway/shift your hips.
And I don't know if this guy is ready to learn how to change the spin on the ball... I've been playing golf for years, and I'm still learning the mechanics of a basic swing, and am nowhere near trying to give the ball back spin, or whatever the heck else you can make it do to spin. Mostly, all I know is that my short irons give me a pretty good back spin, and they are absolutely sticking on impact. No idea why though.
Anyway, best way to learn how to play golf: get lessons. I had a guy from the CPGA give me one lesson, just one, and it improved my game by 5 strokes, minimum. I don't know enough about the game to add anything more than these guys, other than take your back swing fairly slow, and don't bring it back to far.
The more you catch of the ball the more spin you will have (ie taking a small divot, if any). But you can still take a large divot, get high trajectory, and make the ball stick on impact.
Golf is probably the hardest sport to learn and master.

I hardly ever take a divot. If I do, its very small. I agree though, golf is a very difficult sport to learn. I've been playing for years, and still am not satisfied with how I'm playing. I struggle to break 90, but for playing only like twice a month during the summer, I don't find I do horribly. Just not as well as I'd like to, but I don't know if a golfer is ever satisfied with his game.
I can't imagine going from playing no golf and in 3 days doing much of anything different. I'd say your best thing to so is at least know the basic rules, and don't let it bother you if you shoot 120. if your boss plays fast, don't worry about losing a ball in the woods. take the drop so you don't slow everyone up.
