Default Le Tour de France

Tour de France kicks off... in England

LONDON — The Tour de France begins Saturday in London, one year after the venerable bicycle race was rocked by doping allegations.

The opening 7.9-kilometre stage marked the third time the race has graced British soil, and just the first time in over a decade. The Grand Depart, as the tour’s prologue is known, was a sprint through downtown London to observe the second anniversary of the city’s terrorist attacks that killed 52 and injured hundreds more.

From London, the field of 219 international racers representing countries from every continent will continue to Canterbury, in the country’s rural south. The next 18 stages will cover 3,550 km throughout France, from the treacherous mountain stages to the final leg down the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Last year’s winner, American Floyd Landis, was alleged to have had three times the permitted level of testosterone after his victory. It was the latest chapter in an ongoing doping scandal that had recently plagued the sport. Seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong faced similar accusations during his reign, but sufficient proof was never found to strip him of his record-setting titles.

This year’s favourite, Alexandr Vinokourov of Kazakhstan, has also faced questions about his links to a suspect doctor, which he has denied.

The Tour de France is one of my most favorite sporting events to watch. Despite all the doping allegations that plague this sport regardless of which this spectacle is one that showcases not only a battle of stamina and strength but one of guile as well. The strategy and the different strengths of every rider is shown through the next few weeks, and is always interesting even in light of the doping scandels. I feel sorry for Landis either way, if he did dope I feel sorry that he felt he had to, if he didn't I'm sorry that he didn't get a legitimate title. Yet here we have to move on this sport will always face the scandal of doping but true cyclist fans will appreciate the Tour despite the bad press.

Default McEwen The Magnificent

After being caught up in a crash 23km from the finish it seemed that Robbie McEwen’s hopes of equally Erik Zabel’s tally of 12 stage wins would be too much. But the Australian found his legs despite a frantic chase and managed to beat all the other big-name sprinters. Thor Hushovd and Tom Boonen were given better lead-outs but the Australian was able to eclipse them both in a superb sprint.

The 203.0km first stage of the 94th Tour de France – from London to Canterbury – began at 11.00am after the peloton pedaled through a 6.8km neutral zone taking in some of the British capital’s landmarks. There was an official protocol on the Tower Bridge and the peloton stopped while the French and British national anthems were played. The course included three category-four climbs: the first was in Southborough, a 2.3km long ascent with the crest at the 94.5km mark; the second at Goudhurst, a 1.6km long ascent at 121.0km; and the rise at Farthing Common which is 1.1km and peaks at 183.0km. There were three intermediate sprints: the first in Gillingham at the 46.5km mark, the next in Teston at 76.0km and the final one in Tenterden at 140.5km.

Millar: The First Successful Attacker
The initial attack of the 94th Tour came from Feillu (AGRE) and Auge (COF) who tried in kilometer one. The first successful move came from Millar (SDV) who jumped ahead at the 3.5km. By 17km, he led four chasers – Grivko (MRM), Kuschynski (LIQ), Bichot (AGR) and Auge –by 45” while the peloton was at 1’25”. After 33km, Millar’s advantage over the peloton was 4’40”. At 45km the four were 1’40” behind, the peloton was at 5’25”. The points at the first sprint were won by: 1. Millar 6pts; 2. Grivko 4pts; 3. Kuschynski 2pts. The counter attackers were 1’00” behind at the 46.5km mark. The average speed for the first hour was 47.1km/h. Millar was caught by the four chasers at the 48km mark, the peloton was at 5’35”.

CSC Lead Chase
The team of the yellow jersey controlled the peloton’s pursuit of the five escapees. The points for the 2nd intermediate sprint were won by the same trio as the first - Millar, Grivko, Kuschynski. Their quintet was 5’05” ahead of the peloton at the 76km mark. There was a crash in the peloton involving Gonzalo Ramirez (AGR) who was forced to abandon. The average speed for the 2nd hour was 40.1km/h. The points for the 1st climb were won by: Millar, Grivko, Kuschynski. The peloton was at 4’40”.

Reeling In The Escapes
With 92km to go, the advantage of the five leaders reached 6’00”. This was the maximum gain. On the 2nd climb, Bichot attacked and led over the summit to collect 3pts ahead of Auge and Kuschynski. The peloton was 5’50” behind. With 80km to go the peloton was at 5’00”; with 70km, 3’50”... CSC was joined by Vasseur (QSI), Charteau (C.A) and Vansevenant and van Summeren (PRL) who swapped off at the front. Lancaster, Zandio, Moreni and Mercado were involved in a crash at 55km to go.
With 50km to go, Millar and Grivko dropped out of the lead group and waited for the peloton. With 30km to go, the leading trio was 1’05” ahead. Auge attacked with 27km to go and Bichot and Kuschynski returned to the peloton. With 25km to go, Auge led by 35”.

Crash & Mechanical Problems For Sprint Favorites
With 23km to go, McEwen was caught up in a crash. Cavendish had bike troubles and had to change machines twice in the final 25km. Auge took first place at the 3rd climb but was caught 18km from the finish and the Quickstep team took charge. Millar claimed second at Farthing Common and ensured that he would lead the climbing classification for stage two.
McEwen rejoined the peloton in the final 10km but was not seen near the front of the peloton until the final 200m. He jumped into the lead in the final 80m and claimed the win, finishing three meters ahead of his nearest rival. The Australian is now equal with Zabel (MRM) for having the most stage wins for any active rider.
Fabian Cancellara finished in 22nd place and will wear the yellow jersey in stage two.

Not too much happening Stage 2 just another flat day for the sprinters in Belgium. Always great to see the history and the great architecture of the old European countries. Minus the big crash on the wet roads of the last 3km which means that all riders in the group will get the same time, thus everybody finished with the same time, the two Belgium riders the infamous Boonen finished second while Steegman the setup man for his quickstep teammate grabbed the win from Boonen. But great to see the two Belgium teammates grab one, two. McEwan finished sixth so the green jersey goes to Boonen on home soil. Cancellara wound up injured in the pile-up so it remains to be seen how/if he will ride stage 3.

Default Fabian Cancellara Wins Stage, Holds Yellow Jersey

After the 2 breakaway men were eventually caught by Stephane Auge and another rider. Auge went on to win the one climb of the day to take the Climber Jersey from Millar. The then 4 breakaway men managed to open up a sizable lead over the peloton before they were eventually caught just mere metres from the line. Cancellara of all men beat out sprinter Erik Zabel and Robbie McEwan and Tom Boonen, quite a feat for the time trialist world champion. This prompted commentators to make light of comparisons to a former champion Lance Armstrong. Again this is early in the Tour but so much for any nagging injury after the juggernaut of a crash yesterday.-Lee

Default Stage 4

After the breakaway of five riders was caught the peloton made a break for the finish. But with the breakaway Sylvain Chavanel managed to grab enough points in the 4 climbs of the day to take second behind his Cofidis Credit Par Telephone teammate Stephan Auge to have both riders 1, 2 in the climber category. With just 3km to go the sprinters took charge of the race, and what a race to the finish. Thor Hushovd the Norwegian great managed to take the race as Robert Hunter of South Africa mounted his attack just a fraction to late as he lost by a wheel. Aside from that it was just another day for the sprinters. Tomorrow should heat up the climbers race, it will be interesting to see if Millar takes interest and decides to go for a few more climbers points, he took the first climb today to come within 2 points of Auge. Thursday will see 4 Category 4 climbs, 3 Category 3, and 1 Category 2 Climb. There will also be 3 sprints as well. Only 3 withdrawals thus far so the field is still pretty thick with riders, and the mountains are still a long ways away but there should be a little more excitement tomorrow yet. The total distance for tomorrow is 181km considerable shorter than the last two races which went 236.5 (Which was the longest) and 193km today, so the hills should provide a little more excitement, I'm not sure how much of the undulation will come into play over the last couple of km but I don't believe it will be the wide open sprints that we have seen over the past few days.-Lee

Default Stage 5

Stage Of Mixed Emotions: Pozzato Wins... ’Vino’ Loses

The winner of the fifth stage of the 94th Tour de France was Filippo Pozzato, but the loser of the day to Autun was Alexandre Vinokourov. While the Liquigas team can celebrate its first stage win in the Tour de France, the Astana squad will lament its losses because of crashes. Both Andreas Kloden and Vinokourov had accidents in the action-packed stage, Team Astana was completely cracked trying to get Vinokourov back into the field, in vain however. There were 74 riders in the lead group but it’s surprising that there were so many as the pace of the final 20km was frantic: the technical descent almost threw Fabian Cancellara from his bike but the Swiss rider finished 12 in the stage and keeps his yellow jersey for another day. The other big winner was Sylvain Chavanel. Not only was he the most aggressive man, but he also led over each of the eight climbs to claim the polka-dot jersey on a day when he attacked early and swapped turns well with Philippe Gilbert, only to be swallowed up with less than 10km to go. Tom Boonen: Back In Charge!

At the end of a long, hot day Tom Boonen has delivered another win for his Quickstep team. The runner-up in the stage to Gent received the perfect lead-out from his colleagues and didn’t disappoint. He will be back in the green jersey after disposing of Oscar Freire and Erik Zabel in a scripted sprint finish. After allowing Bradley Wiggins to fry in the hot sun after he escaped just two kilometers into the 199.5km stage, the sprinters’ teams teased the Brit was caught 7km from the line and then it was all set up for a classic bunch finish. Boonen raced into the lead in the final 150 meters and claimed his first victory in two years.

The 199.5km sixth stage of the 2007 Tour de France – from Semur-en-Auxois to Bourg-end-Bresse – began at 12.50pm. There were 183 riders at the sign on (Lequatre of the Cofidis team abandoned because of injuries sustained in a crash during stage five). The sun was shining on the race and the temperature at the start was a mild 22 degrees Celsius; the forecast was for 26 degrees at the finish in the Ain department. There were just two category-four climbs: at Grandmont (55km) and Braneion (138km). The three intermediate sprints were in: Bligny-sur-Ouche (at 51.5km), Cormatin (127km) and Pont-de-Vaux (161.5km).

Cofidis Go On The Attack Again
Bradley Wiggins (COF) attacked at the 2km mark and the peloton allowed him plenty of leeway; by 10km his advantage was 5’40”! At the 12km mark, Grivko (MRM) took off in pursuit of the Brit; he was 7’00” behind but no one tried to bridge the gap. The chase ended at 18.5km. At the 24km mark, the bunch was 7’40” behind – this was enough to give Cofidis the virtual lead of the Tour for the second time in two days. At the 38km mark, the peloton was 11’20” behind. The average speed for the first hour was 37.6km/h.
The sprint specialists contested the sprint for points at the 51.5km mark: McEwen, Hunter and Boonen raced ahead of the peloton 15’25” behind Wiggins with Boonen adding 4pts to his tally. The only other bout of action from the peloton was when three Cofidis riders tapped out the tempo on the approach to the first climb. Chavanel added another 2pts to his tally in the mountains classification. The maximum gain for Wiggins was 17’30” at the 57km mark. The average speed for the 2nd hour was 36.0km/h.

Pursuing The Pursuit Specialist
With 140km to go the pace of the peloton picked up with Arvesen (CSC) and Vasseur (QSI) the men responsible for sharing the work of the pursuit. At the feedzone (110km to go) a Lampre rider also came to the front of the peloton. The deficit to Wiggins was 11’45”. Degano (BAR) crashed in the feedzone and was forced to abandon. The injured Astana riders – Vinokourov and Kloden – and their colleagues spent most of the day at the rear of the peloton. The average speed for the 3rd hour was 35.6km/h. With 80km to go, Wiggins lost his virtual lead of the Tour: 5km from the 2nd sprint his advantage was down to 5’00”. Quickstep completely committed to leading Boonen out to the sprint at the 127km mark and the leader promptly obliged his colleagues by beating Zabel to the line to regain the lead of the points classification. The peloton was 3’10” behind Wiggins in Cormatin.

Slow Roasted Wiggins
After the sprint, Wiggins increased his pace and pushed his advantage back up to over five minutes. At the top of the 2nd climb he was 5’15” ahead of the peloton that was led by riders from T-Mobile and AG2R for a brief time. Then Charteau (C.A) came to the front and joined forces with the CSC team. The average speed for the 4th hour was 36.0km/h. Unimpressed with a broken spoke with 48km to go, Wiggins calmly stepped off his bike, removed his rear wheel and tossed it to the side of the road. With 33km to go, his lead was 2’30”. The chase was shared by the usual suspects: Milram, T-Mobile, Credit Agricole, Quickstep and Predictor… with 28km to go, the lead was 1’10”. The Brit was left by the peloton to cook in the sun. "It’s the Tour de France," said Wiggins after the stage, "this is not the race that you just sit up and wait for the peloton." He was caught 7km from the line.
