The Minnesota Wild added depth to their blue line Wednesday, acquiring defenseman Petteri Nummelin from the Atlanta Thrashers for a conditional third-round pick in either 2006 or 2007.
Minnesota also signed Nummelin to a multi-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.
A third-round pick of Columbus in 2000, Nummelin made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets the following season after spending the previous three campaigns with HC Davos of Switzerland, recording four goals and 12 assists in 61 games before being traded to Atlanta in December 2002. But he returned to the Swiss League in 2001-02 and has played the last five seasons with HC Lugano.
A native of Finland, the 33-year-old Nummelin helped his country to the silver medal at the Winter Olympics in Torino this past February and the bronze at the World Championship in Latvia last month.
