Wild Season Preview
Quote:
Minnesota has never spent much on payroll and wasn't about to change its philosophy because of the new CBA. The Wild prefers to continue keeping costs under control, but manages to stay competitive because it keeps drafting and developing good young players. They're lucky because the fans in Minnesota are so rabid and patient, so they can keep taking steps to get better at the pace they choose. And their appearance in the 2003 conference finals proves they are on the right path.
Since their last game
The Wild continued to tread carefully when it came to making moves, allowing some older veterans, including one of their top scorers, Andrew Brunette to leave, while creating room for some of the players being developed in the minors. But they did upgrade the lineup by adding speedy scoring forwards Brian Rolston and Todd White.
Strengths/Weaknesses
Great speed up front, an excellent goaltending tandem and arguably the most effective coach in the game. But this team always struggles to score goals and it lacks the size it needs to handle things when the going gets rough.
Burning Question
Will the Wild be able to adapt to the new NHL?
A: Lemaire spent his playing career in Montreal with one of NHL's great offensive teams, but his coaching days have been all about defense and the trap. That's not supposed to work any more. Lemaire is fortunate to have some very good skaters, but whether he can get comfortable using them in a new way remains to be seen.
