Nummelin, playing in his 13th hockey worlds, gave Finland a 1-0 lead on a 5-on-3, beating Denmark goaltender Michael Madsen with a wrist shot into the top corner at 7:36 of the first period of the Group D game.
"We played with a lot of patience," said Finnish captain Ville Peltonen of the Florida Panthers. "Our power play worked well and our penalty killing was good, too."
