CHICAGO (Reuters) - Tom Glavine picked up his 300th Major League victory on Sunday when the veteran pitcher helped lead the New York Mets to an 8-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.
The 41-year-old Glavine became the 23rd major leaguer to reach the milestone and the first since Greg Maddux of the Cubs achieved the honor on August 7, 2004.
"Believe me, I know the company I am in, (and) I'm proud as can be to be a part of that company," Glavine told a news conference.
"I don't know what the time frame is going to be in terms of really having an appreciation for what I have been able to accomplish."
"There's a sense of relief, there's a sense of accomplishment."
Watched by his wife, children and parents, the left-hander gave up six hits and two runs in six-plus innings to boost his 21-year Major League career record to 300-197.
He also helped his own cause with the bat by singling to center field in the second inning to drive in the Mets's first run.
The achievement capped a history-making weekend for Major League Baseball.
San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds tied Hank Aaron's all-time record of 755 career home runs and the New York Yankees's Alex Rodriguez became the youngest player to reach 500 homers in games on Saturday.
And to think, he could have wound up playing for the LA Kings. Guess he made the right choice of careers.
