LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Hoping to get the chance to prove he is the toughest Latvian to play in the NHL, Raitis Ivanans on Thursday signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Signed as an undrafted free agent by Montreal in July 2004, Ivanans made his NHL debut with the Canadiens last season, collecting nine penalty minutes in four games. He spent the majority of the campaign with Hamilton of the American Hockey League, registering two goals and 120 penalty minutes in 43 contests.
A native of Riga, Latvia, the 27-year-old Ivanans had recorded at least 146 penalty minutes - including a career-high 270 in 2000-01 - each of the previous six seasons, which saw him play in the AHL, ECHL and the United and Central Hockey Leagues.
