Because they didn't have the money, they spent it on McCabe. Would I prefer Blake? Sure, but there is no guarantee he would sign with the Leafs. Just like there was no guarantee any of the other big name defensemen would have signed with the Leafs if they hadn't resigned McCabe.

Ferguson did the smart thing, he could have let McCabe go and hoped that he could get one of the other big name defensemen to sign. Instead he saw that he already had a big name defenseman willing to sign with the team, so he signed him. As the old saying goes, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Think of what would have happened if he let McCabe walk then couldn't sign any of the other top defensemen to replace him.

Then on top of guaranteeing that we have a top defenseman (two really when you include Kaberle) he has gone out, got another former all-star defenseman/Stanley cup champion and if that wasn't enough got that stay-at-home defenseman that everyone kept saying we were missing.

As far as our defense goes, Ferguson did a great job this off-season. Now we just need to see what he does with our offense and see how his changes at goal are going to turn out.

Now, to get back on the topic of the Blake signing, great pick up by LA, and compared to what other defensemen are getting a good price as well.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Colorado offering a contract to Leetch to replace Blake's loss.

Leetch is still a 50 pts defenseman if he manages to stay healthy IMO. And, considering his age and the fact that he comes off an ordinary season, he can probably be signed for a maximum of 3M$.

I can't imagine the Avs going into the season with Brisebois on the top pair...
