Default Marty Turco Signs With Blackhawks

Not confirmed yet but I've heard this from multiple sources, so it looks like Turco is in, and Niemi is probably out.

Ouch. Not that Turco is a bad goalie by any means but I think Niemi deserves a shot if they can afford to keep him.

So if this is true does that mean Huet is their starter with Turco as a backup or what?

I've heard more sources say he'll be announced as a Blackhawk tomorrow.

And Turco will be the starter and Huet the backup.

I'd take Turco and a $1M defenseman over Niemi any day.

CHI has a chance to get a real value contract out of this deal. That's the recipe for any team in a cap league, let alone a club in cap hell.

And if it doesn't work out, it's only one year.

I've heard rumors about this too. If it's true, than I'm pretty sure Neimis out and Turcos in.

Confirmed, but $1.3 million. Hawks are walking away from Niemi.

"Instead, the Blackhawks have reportedly signed veteran netminder Marty Turco to a one-year, $1.3 million contract."

Interesting. Two story lines...they walk away from the guy who won their first Cup in decades and then sign Turco to one year for $1.3 million after he said he really wanted to be in Philly, but turned down $2 mil/year for 3 years.

I guess Turco wants to use this season to earn a bigger contract next year.

I wasn't sold on Niemi but Turco hasn't been very good lately either. We'll see how he does with a better D in front of him.

This whole situation sounds awfully familiar..

Blackhawks will sign Turco for around $1.5 and walk away from Niemi.

I can live with being $200k off on Turco's contract.

In all seriousness though, for a cap-strapped (and maybe cash-strapped if you believe they lost money) team, this move makes a lot more sense than Niemi at $2.75. Now they can go out and get another defenseman so they don't have to play John Scott on the bottom pairing every game, and so they have another penalty killing defenseman since Campbell is fairly useless in that regard.

Toss Willie Mitchell or Andy Sutton a $1.5M contract for one year and see if they bite.
