[ANA/NYI] Wisniewski for Conditional 3rd in 2011
After the Ducks and Wisniewski avoided arbitration:

The Ducks resolved one of their key lingering issues this summer on Friday as they are expected to announce the signing of defenseman James Wisniewski to a one-year deal worth $3.25 million, avoiding an arbitration hearing that was scheduled for Tuesday.
A source with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed that a deal had been reached. Wisniewski, 26, was among the NHL leaders in ice time last season as he logged an average of 24 minutes, 20 seconds in 69 games. The five-year veteran had three goals and a career-best 27 assists while racking up 56 penalty minutes and a minus-5 rating.
Both the Ducks and Wisniewski’s agent, Bill Zito, have been talking again in recent weeks after they couldn’t agree on a multiyear extension during the season. The two sides were believed to be far apart but the one-year contract avoids a potentially contentious arbitration process while allowing the defenseman to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The Ducks now have four proven defensemen under contract and Wisniewski should take his usual spot in the top-four rotation along with Lubomir Visnovsky and free-agent acquisition Toni Lydman.

The New York Islanders acquired James Wisniewski from the Anaheim Ducks on Friday for a conditional third-round pick in 2011.
The 26-year-old Wisniewski had three goals and 27 assists in 69 regular-season games last season for a career-high 30 points. He led Anaheim in blocked shots with 102, had 129 hits and averaged 24:20 of ice time.
"We see James as a key addition to our team and we feel our fans will connect with his style of play," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said. "He is a solid puck-moving defenseman who can bring an added element of toughness to our blue line."
The Michigan native has 17 goals and 80 assists in 254 regular-season games with Chicago and Anaheim.

Great trade for the Islanders.

Nice move by the Isles. They're really making a solid effort to rebuild. I think in 2 years they'll be able to do some serious damage if they keep it up.

I agree, a great trade for the Islanders to add to their blueline.

Bad move for the Ducks, they should've kept him, first of all, he's a good young defenseman and was a good figure with the team, but besides that, they only get a third-round pick in return for giving up such a guy?
I'm not even going to say that the Islanders made a steal of a deal, the Ducks simply made a stupid one.

It's not as cut-and-dry as you would like to make it seem. Wisniewski's hold out and path to arbitration certainly soured Bob Murray's view on him, and probably did the same to the Ducks' owners as well. That sort of thing ruins relationships between teams and players (see Zherdev, Nikolai and the Rangers, Salo, Tommy and the Islanders and, most likely, Niemi, Antti and the Blackhawks). It's incredibly common, and I think it's the case here, especially since he was going into arbitration asking for $4.5M.
They probably were planning on walking away from the arbitration award regardless of the outcome.
Losing the respect and favor of the management, the owners, and presumably the coaching staff puts the writing on the wall for any player, regardless of their status (see Phaneuf, Dion and the Flames). It was just a matter of time before Wizniewski was traded, but since the Ducks have to sign Ryan, they probably wanted to move him as soon as possible and Garth Snow was there to pick the carcass. Which leads me to my next point.
Wisniewski's holdout, signing and trade sends a message to Bobby Ryan. This move was much more political than hockey-based, otherwise they would have been able to find a much better deal for Wisniewski.

I don't think there are many if any, purely hockey trades anymore. Every trade seems to have cap implications, either immediate or down the road involved.
I think you hit the nail on hte head about sending a message to Bobby Ryan and his agents. You might find yourself in Atlanta if you don't watch what you are doing.
Personally as a Leafs fan I don't like this deal. One of the weak areas on the Isle's was the defense and they just went along way to filling 25min a night with a decent defender. IT is just going to make it harder for the Leafs to jump ahead of the Isle's in the standings.
From the Isle's p.o.v. it is good. They don't need 3rd round picks that might become something in 3-4years. They need to build a team that in 1-2 years can give their young core a taste of the post season.

But even then it seems a bad trade to me still, if you're going to move a player because he's troublesome,a t least get something in return.
A 3rd-rounder for Wisniewski is ridiculous.
