Default Fredrik Pettersson Signs With The Atlanta Thrashers

He was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2005, but since they never signed him to a contract, their rights have lapsed and he's become a Free Agent. While he doesn’t have the size that NHL teams crave (he’s around 5’10”, 190lbs), he uses his speed and skills to over come it. He likes to enter the offensive zone at full speed to open things up for a shot or a pass. Pettersson also has a fantastic slap shot and isn’t shy about using it.

For Frölunda, he’s been a fantastic leader and isn’t shy when it comes to physical play. He has an excellent work ethic, is good on the forecheck and plays the game with a lot of intensity. He’s often called an agitator. At times though, he can be reckless in his play, leading to unnecessary penalties.

For a quick glimpse at his skills, look no further than the SEL outdoor game between Frölunda and Färjestad that took place in December. He had a hat trick in the game, including an impressive diving goal coming off of a giveaway and an equally impressive backhand goal on a partial breakaway. His third goal was a one-time shot on the powerplay.

The video below consists of the highlights from the game. He’s number 10 in white.

Quote:
According to information provided to SPORT-Expressen, there is interest from several NHL clubs.

“I do not know much about that, I focus on Frölunda first. If it shows up after, I may consider it then" says Fredrik Pettersson, who tested the North American game in the Canadian junior league WHL 2005-2007, with the Calgary Hitmen.

“I got on extremely well over there. I liked the speed and the smaller ice surface, I can use my shot more. My goal is obviously to get to the NHL" said Pettersson, who was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 2005 .

But those rights have expired. Now he can sign for any team.
When asked about who’s interested

Quote:
“I'm totally disconnected. I have not heard so much about that, but I think it felt good for me this season. If there are any, I will consider it then" said Pettersson.
When asked what it would take for him to go over

Quote:
“If I were to go over, I'd have to have a real chance to play in the NHL. I like it in Frölunda and also get ice time" said Pettersson, whose contract with Frölunda expires after next season

His contract is for another year, but has a out-clause for the NHL, per agent Donald Bodén.

Wendel Clark skated to Bure and said: "If Odjick touches Gilmour one more time, I'll take YOUR head off!" Bure must have passed on the message. Odjick never touched me the rest of the game. - Gilmour

IF he values ice time like he said, then Toronto is the one place where he is guaranteed a shot at earning a top 6 forward spot.

Let's hope salesman Burke can pull another one out of his hat.

Anaheim, Carolina, Columbus, Florida, Nashville, Islanders, Rangers, and Pittsburgh (he is a winger after all) could give him just as much of a chance at a top six spot next season as Toronto could.

Toronto has one maybe 2 locks for a top six position,. Those are Kessel and Kadri. And Kadri is a maybe.

None of those other teams can offer him a 4/6 or 5/6 chance to play top 6 minutes and get 1st unit PP time.

The word is out. Toronto is the place to go if you want an open audition for a top 6 role.

True,Toronto needs all the offense it can attain, and i hope Burke can sign him. Hopefully next season will be a good season for the Toronto Maple leafs with Kadri coming and adding a few free agents to the mix will increase the chances of a better Toronto Maple leafs team.

As long as we don't give 2 lottery picks to Boston for Kessel I will be a little happy. If The Leafs play some meaningful games in late March I will be wearing a perma grin.

The Bar is set pretty low here in LEafer land.

He's not a center and has never played it at all, so he won't be competing for top six center spot. He also prefers playing on the right wing.

Toronto has Phil Kessel ahead of him in the right wing spot, so he only has 1/2 chance at being in the top six in his preferred position in Toronto. 3/4 chance at being in the top six as a winger.

He has just as much of a chance to compete for a top six spot on the mentioned teams as he does in Toronto.
Kessel has also played center and there have been more than a few rumblings of him being tried back there again.

Pettersson would never be guaranteed the PP time in those other cities. Not a chance. There are either to many good players or too many big contracts.

Take Columbus, there is Nash to begin with. Huselius who's contract basically guarantees him top 6 minutes. Filitov is coming in. Brassard is looking to rebound and take a top 6 if not top 3 spot.

Okposo is RW in New York. With Tavares and Moulson eating up top PP minutes.

Carolina, will be giving Ruttu, Staal, Whitney(he will re-sign), Sutter, Cole and Jokinen most of the top minutes.

Anaheim has Perry, Getzlaf and Ryan to start with, and if Lupul gets healthy he is another top 6 guy.

On Florida there's, Horton, Weiss, Booth, Frolik, Repik, Stillman, Olesz all battling for top ice time.

IF he covets ice time then Toronto is his best bet.

The 22-year-old Pettersson is fighting right now for a World Championship spot, he was one of three Frölunda players in the Three Crowns-squad meet on Wednesday.

In autumn, "Freddan" could find himself in the world's best league, NHL. He is no longer bound to the Edmonton Oilers, who at one time drafted him (fifth round, 2005), but he is now free to go to any club.

"There is great interest in him, and obviously it is a great advantage to potentially be able to negotiate with 30 clubs instead of being locked into one," said Frederick's agent, Donald Bodén to Sportsday.se.

It is said that you received a contract proposal?

"I can neither confirm nor deny."

Do you think Frederick played in the NHL next season?

"[long silence] Ah.. this question I will not answer."

Wants to go back, if it is a good deal

Frederick, who turns 23 in June, played two seasons in the Canadian junior league with the Calgary Hitmen, he enjoys life and hockey in North America and has never pretended to be objective is that as soon as possible to go back.

But he does not take any bids at any time, and it gives the fans hope of staying with Frölunda:

"Should I go over, I know that I would have to have a fair chance to make the team. Then of course you never know," said Frederick to Sportsday.se.

What do you know about interest to you?

"I know there were some clubs who have followed me, but not more than that. My agent and I said we are taking the following season."

The development is positive

Frederick has a good life in Frölunda, and is a crowd favorite. It means that he's not going to bite on an unsatisfactory contract just because 'NHL' is on it.

But his development in recent years - 13-26-38 points - has led many teams to think about the little (178 cm) Gothenburg who proved that he is good on small rinks.

That is what makes Frölunda General Manager Kent Norberg think a little extra right now. He is said to be working on bringing in a player like Mika Pyörälä (Philadelphia Flyers) and Janne Pesonen (Ak Bars Kazan).

On Wednesday, Fredrik Pettersson wore his blue and yellow and was back in practice. But Tre Kronor is currently 26-strong, with the chance to get some players from the HV71 and Djurgården squads - and probably a few more NHL names.

"I might not going as far as World Championships, although I obviously would like to be there. I take it in stages and try to survive the next 'cut'. I feel in good shape, and my legs are find," says Fredrik.
In an effort to try to get you guys all hyped up and talking about how much you want him and what your lines would look like with him in it and so on, I'll talk about more about him. He's got a ton of heart, great speed, good skill and hockey sense. I don't think it would be a stretch for him to put up 15 goals and 15 assists as a rookie, while playing good two-way hockey.

He's not like Brunnstrom in that if he's not scoring he's useless. He's a fast, hard-working two-way player. If his scoring doesn't come around right away, he'll be able to play defensive hockey and could work well on a penalty kill unit, with his speed giving him a good advantage (like Helm or Sjostrom).
