Kubina brings a big body that's capable of moving the puck to Atlanta. He also has one hell of a shot. I wouldn't be surprised to see his numbers jump from his 40 points last year to around 50 this year with increased powerplay time with incredible offensive players, like Enstrom, Kovalchuk, and Kozlov.
Armstrong brings a young Burke type guy to Toronto. Scored 22 goals with Atlanta last year while playing on the second and third lines with guys like White and Reasoner. If they put him with someone who can play offense and get him some serious playing time, I wouldn't be surprised to see him become a 25 goal, 55 point player for the Leafs.
Wait! Hold the presses, Armstrong might not be part of it.
TSN says Leafs are dealing Kubina to Atlanta and what they are getting in return is D Garnet Exelby, in a move to clear cap space for the Leafs. McGuire disagrees, says Exelby is a tough D’man that Burke wants.
Craig Custance of Sporting News tweets, “Colby Armstrong is not part of the Kubina deal. Thrashers not interested in trading Colby.”
Sources tell TSN Pavel Kubina has been traded to the Atlanta Thrashers.
The trade call hasn't been made, however the Leafs will receive Garnet Exelby as part of a return package.
Kubina, 32, has played the last three seasons in Toronto after signing a four-year contract with the Leafs three years ago to the day. He's set to earn $5-million next season.
He has spent the previous nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning organization.
Kubina, who scored 14 goals and 40 points last season, set career-highs with 33 assists and 38 points in 2005-06.
The native of Celadna, Czech Republic played in the 2004 NHL All-Star Game and he was a key member of Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup winning team in 2004.
Kevin Allen tweets: “The Kubina deal gives Atlanta a top four defense of Hainsey, Enstrom, Bogosian and Kubina. All four have offensive ability.”
IMO, It's a pretty decent top four, and makes for a solid back end to the PP units. I'd want a little more defensive ability, but Bogosian and Kubina will help.
