I just have trouble accepting the premise that trading a superior player for an inferior player is a good deal because of salaries alone.

His salary was an albatross, and crippled the Rangers for moving forward. And you still got a good return.

Would you rather have Gomez and lose Staal, Dubinsky and Zherdev or would you rather lose those three for the express purpose of keeping Gomez playing in New York without anyone to put his passes in the net?

For $7.3M he just wasn't producing, and didn't look like he was going to in any time during his stay with the Rangers.

You can keep saying you would rather have traded Drury and Redden, but neither of those had anywhere near the value that Gomez had. Instead of giving up Gomez and getting Higgins (3-time 20-goal scorer), McDonagh (the Habs best prospect), and Valentenko (a player who's similar to Kasparaitis, only with a better shot) for him, you probably would have got only Higgins for Drury and maybe only Janik for Redden.

Sather brought in young talent that will help the Rangers in the long-run. The dividends won't show up immediately, but Staal/Dubinsky/Zherdev/Higgins/McDonagh makes for a more balanced and better Rangers team in the future.

Wow. I was on the Canadiens forums, and the fans are furious at Gainey. I can see Scott Gomez looking at his computer, browising the forum, and a tear silently rolling down his cheek.

I can hear the Montreal media sharpening their knives to cut Gomez to pieces with his lazy attitude. Serves the shmuck right.

The "Russian defender" is called Pavel Valentenko.

I don't consider Gomez lazy at all. You're just pissed at him because he wanted out of Jersey.

Do you know what New Jersians call people that want out of New Jersey?

Residents.

Wow, where do I begin with this brilliant post?

I am so pissed that Lou didn't sign a second line center who rarely scores more than 20 goals over $7 million a year that it's clearly clouded my judgement.

And I really don't see the point of the New Jersey jokes, considering I'm not from New Jersey! I don't know if it makes you feel larger as a person to hurl lame jokes around or if it's a character flaw, but you really should address it. Hell, maybe it just comes with being a Rangers fan!
