The Florida Panthers have traded the rights to unrestricted free agent Jay Bouwmeester to the Calgary Flames for defenseman Jordan Leopold and a third round draft pick.

The Flames can now negotiate with Bouwmeester prior to the July 1 free-agency period.

I'm almost positive he'll resign with Calgary, because Bouw said he wanted to play for a Canadian team, and because of Phaenuf/Regs and company, but this is a smooth and smart move by the Panthers. Loosing Bouwmeester is tough, but trading for Jordan Leopold just for his rights is a very smart and safe move.
That being said I will rofl my ass off if JayBo signs with another team. Sutter will have been kicked in the balls hard.

the move could have been done just to dump leopold's salary.
it's likely j-bo will not sign with calgary. he asking for $7 million a season. unless calgary gives him something that's unbelievable, he may just test free agency. a 25 year old is in high demand and teams will overpay to get boumweester.

Actually, I forgot Leopold is scheduled to become a UFA on July 1st, so it's actually a pretty smart move by Sutter. Personally, I think JayBo will resign, but that's just me. I think he just wanted to get out of Florida.

IMO 7 million a season for Bouwmeester is outrageous. He has yet to do anything to impress me enough to put him in the same category as other defensemen earning 6m+

it's still not gonna stop gm's throwing ridiculous contracts to get him. if j-bo doesn't sign a deal with calgary, he's gonna go into the free agency market as the premier defenceman. at 25 years old, he's gonna command a lot of interest and he is gonna fetch incredible offers. i wouldn't be surprised if someone gave him $8 million a season. he's an incredible puck-moving defenceman and puts 15 goals a season. boumweester knows of the offers he's gonna get so it's a good chance he may test the market.
