I think a lower salary looks better on Lidstrom and makes Holland look better of a GM. If Campbell wants to play for money thats fine, it just how our civilization works today.

Not happy we went after Sundin. I would had preferred Rolston or Hossa for 10$ mil over Sundin. But hey if you have the room why not toss money out the window...

7:14pm ET - Habs still in mix for Sundin, with a 2-year offer, but also going after Hossa. Likely come down to who says 'yes' first (if one does)...

I'm guessing then the Habs must also be offering upwards of 20 plus mil for two years.

Nah! We can offer something the Canucks can't... a chance at winning!

Well I like this offer frankly. This team has NEVER had a top line center and it's up and coming people (Sedin, Kesler, Hodgson etc) will benefit in a big way from having a journeymen of this caliber leading the way. And when you look at the breakdown of the offer he's being paid bonuses of 5 mil each year from what I understood....so really, his base salary is 5 mil....

Oh and I think the Canucks, with more tweaking and work from the brass will be just fine. Don't forget that our team was completely destroyed by D line injuries....missing the playoffs had many contributing issues.

This team will be fine.

Allow me to first state that I'm a closet Canucks' fan and have been since the King Richard era. Having said that, fans in BC were up and arms on Marcus Naslund and his $6 million contract. Assuming that Sundin can repeat at being a point per game player, which in my books is unlikely in Vancouver as he wouldn't have anyone to play with, what are the fans going to say then about his $10 million cap hit? Some fans are pissy at Luongo's lucrative contract, imagine...

I don't think one can compare Marcus to Mats. Sundin has been a leader for many years now, Marcus has folded up camp in about the same amount of time. Sundin, 1305 games played and 1321 points....he's not going to forget how to be a leader and a point producer. AND, there are plenty of options for him to have line mates. For one I see Mason Raymond being a fine fit for him. Something like Chechoo is to big Joe.

Yes, Vancity fans are moronic. You have no argument here. Fact is, your right, they would likely moan all night about this offer if he should accept. However these very same fans don't know what a top line center looks like. These fans won't know what hit them if he should arrive in town. I tell you this JL, when you never had it, you don't have a first overall pick and you can't seem to make a trade that really works for the team....pay the man. I don't care, this is the only move that really makes sense for this team moving forward. You MUST have a true #1 center and in Mats they potentially have one. And whether he comes or not I like that Gillis has taken the shot. Yes, this team would benefit greatly from Hossa but it solves a secondary problem. Yes, they need a pure scorer, but they need a top center first.

IT wouldn't surprise me in the least if Mats signs, Naslund signs too. I also wouldn't be too shocked if Shanahan was offered a contract.
