If we were to believe him the Leafs are almost done with a deal for Bouwmeester, and we are about to announce a new GM.......complete hogwash if you ask me!

I think that Sundin knows exactly what he wants. If he was interested in the teams/salaries on the table, he would have made up his mind already. I don't buy the theory that Sundin doesn't know if he wants to play hockey next year or retire. As Stevie Y said before, if you're not convinced that you should retire, it means that you still want to play! A good monetary offer and/or being offered a chance to win the Cup should help sway a decision to keep on playing or retirement.
Not saying that he does, but if Sundin wants to play for the Leafs only, why doesn't he come straight out and say it? It's not like they're in a bind cap-wise.
There's something very suspicious about this whole story. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but something just doesn't seem right. It seems to me that he has had contacts with a team (unknown) who needs to make some room for him, either on their salary cap or on their roster. Until then, no decisions will be announced as a public announcement would tie the hands of the GM trying to trade away players to make room for Sundin. Not counting that teams cant surpass the cap by more than 5% at any time, and they must be under the cap by the time the season starts...
The more I think about it, if the offers from Vancouver and Montreal were appealing enough for him, he would have signed by now. I'm anticipating a big trade being announced and soon after (or at the same time), the signing of Sundin.

It's still all speculation.
I heard the other day that at some point over the last two seasons Sundin tore his labrum. This is rarely an injury that heals by itself and most often requires surgery, something Mats has not yet opted for. Given that he has apparently spent the offseason fishing and kicking back rather than working out, a strange option for a 38 year old looking to stay at the top of the league, this makes the most sense to me.
Surgery would mean missing most the season, and would at this point pretty much end his career. If you ask me, he's giving his body as much time as possible to heal before comitting to coming back.
I think that in all likelihood, if his labrum is an issue, Mats is done.
But then, it is still just speculation. |

I read somewhere recently that there is a deadline approaching regarding the NHLPA's ability to revisit the current CBA, and that the league may suspend the 5% bonus that teams can spend beyond the cap on players over 35 until the NHLPA confirms that it won't reopen the aggreement.
I think the deadline is later this month.
If this is the case, it may explain why Sundin, Selanne, Sakic and Shanahan haven't resigned yet. |

Mats Sundin attended Peter Forsberg's own golf tournament in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden and had a very brief chat with the press.
"The decision isn't bothering me. I've had a fantastic summer and have just been taking it easy. It feels good to rest, physically and mentally from hockey to be able to reach a good decision."
Is it possible the decision will wait until the season has started?
"I don't think so. I want to reach a decision before the season starts, that's how it feels anyway."
We talked to Saku Koivu recently and he'd really like to see you in his Montreal.
"It's very flattering. The interest has been amazing, from all the NHL. That so many teams and players, both swedish and foreign have been getting in touch is nice. Then again there's only one person who can make the decision and that's me."

UPDATE: from the Cliff Fletcher. Not sure where he got that information, but he's quoted in the Star this morning...
Sundin, meanwhile, is expected to start skating soon in Sweden. "He's working out off the ice and he's supposed to start on the ice the beginning of the week," said Fletcher.
