Go away for a couple of weeks and Sundin is a Canucks... Geesh!

If Montreal was where Sundin wanted to play, and money wasn't enough to get somewhere else, it would make sense that Sundin would have already signed, thus allowing Gainey to move on to improving the team in other areas.

Or he truly hadn't made up his mind if he wanted to play or not? In spite of being a hated Leafs, Sundin has a reputation of being a straight shooter, not one of a liar and I do believe him when he says that he hasn't made a decision to play or not.

So much for that idea.

REPORT: SUNDIN TO MAKE DECISION ON FUTURE ON AUG. 1

According to a report on RDS, Mats Sundin will make a decision on his future on Aug. 1.

At that time the former captain of the Maple Leafs will make a decision as to whether he will play this upcoming season or simply retire.

This comes on the heels of Sundin shooting down a report in a Swedish newspaper that stated that he had decided to accept a $20 million, two-year deal from the Vancouver Canucks.

Despite the rumours continuing to swirl, Sundin has repeatedly stated that he has yet to make a decision and several teams, including the Maple Leafs, remain in the mix.

The 37-year old Sundin is coming off a very productive campaign with the Leafs, recording 32 goals and 78 points in 74 games.

Come on Mats, do us all a favour and make up your freakin' mind already!!!

And now E-Clown is at it again...

Are the Habs Gearing Up for #13?
Thursday @ 9:53 PM ET

Some quotes from various sources who have emailed me this evening.

An Assistant GM:

"They (the Canadiens) finally feel they are going to get him (Mats). They are dying to make an announcement soon."

A Scout:

"People have stopped buying that the Leafs are going hard after Mats. Everyone is startin gto assume it will be the Habs."

A Swedish Player:

"Mats is preparing tonight for something that is coming soon. Many of us wold be shocked if it made it past Monday....and even more shocked if it wasn't Montreal."

A senior NHL person:

"It is all falling into the Habs lap. The Rangers are out of it and Mats does owe it to himself to play another season. To try and bring Stanley back to Montreal for the Centennial."

Source...

Personally, I'll believe it when it happens...

I'm also a hockey person and I say that the NHL will have a pro team on mars by 2013. Doesn't mean that it's gonna happen... (although it would fulfill butman's dream of a completely vacant attendance at a hockey game, not even air)

You're taking my quotes out of context. Essentially I agree with your assessment as to why he hasn't signed yet, but the statements about "if it was about the money he'd have signed in Vancouver on July 1" are no more indicative of Mats' position than "if he wanted to win a Cup why didn't he just sign in Montreal already?".

Clearly he wanted some time to decide he was both mentally and physically prepared to continue his NHL career.

As for the Eklund crap, the guy is wrong about 98% of the time, so I'm not worried. What worries me is a team like Colorado scooping him at the last minute.

Well, here's to Mats making his decision in exactly a week.

I can't wait for all this to be over. It's getting ridiculous. Sometimes, (like this morning), when I have some downtime at work, I scan through various hockey teams website's message boards just to read different poeple's opinions on different subjects. Most of the time, these boards are filled with idiots who know nothing about hockey, but you can still get 1 post out of 5 where someone has a decent view/opinion on something.

Since this whole Sundin thing has started, I find myself going on the Vancouver and Montreal boards more often, for pure entertainment. Some poeple on the Van boards are saying that if he signs with the Nucks, they'll be the highest scoring team in the league and that's why he'll sign there. Now, I'm all for being optomistic and cheering for my team, but this is pushing it.

Then you go onto the Habs forum, and according to some, he'll sign there because they are better than the Nucks in every aspect of the game. Yes, a few even say Price is better than Luongo.

My point is, this whole thing seems to be bringing out the worst in everybody. Poeple refuse to take their bias gogles off, and it's making each team's fans look more and more like morons.

So please Mats, you said August 1st, stand by your word. Don't push it back again. Maybe then everyone in this country can come back to their senses.

P.S. this is the only hockey forum where I'm actualy a member, and it's becoming evident as to why. I don't post often, but read comments pretty much on a daily basis. It's nice to see a place where people can argue/debate in a civilised manner, explaining why they agree and disagree on different things, not just reponding with one linners saying "you're an idiot" or "noob". lol

Keep up the good work guys and girls.

Cheers

Agreed on both counts.

Unfortunately, it's part of being a fan. I've moderated on the Habs' forum since its opening and I've seen both sides of the coin. Some fans in Montreal see Kovalev as a superstar and Koivu as the "heart and soul" (I hate that expression). If you look league-wide, there are tons of better players. Now I'm not picking on Habs' fans only, it's the same thing with every team. Why? Because they know their team more than they know the rest of the league!

By the way, glad you feel that way about this forum.

They have a thing in the paper going on out here where people can write in and offer up free stuff to Sundin to entice him to Vancouver...it's tongue in cheek, mostly...a new Volvo, free dental work for life, etc...

My favourite was the pastor that offered a "get out of hell free card".

All taxable benefits though... and like he needs that. It makes for a good headline though.

HOCKEYEXPRESSEN.SE: recently reported Mats Sundin denied setting August 1st as his deadline for deciding on retirement or returning to the NHL next season, adding that he hopes to make a decision sometime in early August.
