The Florida Panthers named veteran defenceman Bryan McCabe as their team captain on Wednesday.

McCabe, 34, is entering his second season with the Panthers after seven seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"The selection of Bryan as the captain of our club was something that became obvious to our staff after working with him for the past year," second-year coach Peter DeBoer said in a statement.

"He exudes all of the attributes you look for in a leader and will be a natural extension of the coaches and our message into the dressing room."

Florida hasn't had a permanent captain since Olli Jokinen was traded late in the 2007-08 season.

McCabe is nearing the 1,000-game mark in an NHL career that began in 1995 with the New York Islanders. He's scored 130 goals and 327 assists in 986 games, with 1,615 penalty minutes.

The Panthers named forwards Stephen Weiss and Cory Stillman as assistants.

Good for him.

I think he will be a good Captain for the panthers.
