Clutch performances attract Florida to Repik
The history of the Canadian Hockey League’s European Import draft during the last ten years rarely features 16-year-olds. The majority of the European-born prospects will wait until it is either their NHL Draft year or after they have been already been drafted by an NHL team before making the journey.
Czech native Michal Repik is one player that bucked the trend, joining the Vancouver Giants two years ago.
That willingness to take on a new challenge in a foreign land, combined with his God-given hockey talent made Repik one of the more intriguing prospects in the top half of the 2007 NHL Entry. It proved to be a combination the Florida Panthers could not ignore, selecting Repik at No. 40.
“He’s a smart two-way player who was highly rated on our lists,” said Scott Luce, Floriad’s director of scouting. “We couldn’t pass up on him. (GM and coach) Jacques (Martin) saw him play in the Memorial Cup and was impressed with his good hockey sense.”
